Following School Shooting, 86% Want More Action to Identify and Treat Mental Illness

Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Americans want something done following the horrific news from Sandy Hook Elementary School last week, and a plurality believes a greater emphasis on mental health issues will be the most effective way to prevent such tragedies.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 48% of Americans believe more action to treat mental health issues will do the most to prevent incidents like last Friday’s school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut. Twenty-seven percent (27%) think stricter gun control laws will do the most to prevent such shootings, while 15% put the emphasis on limits on violent movies and video games. Ten percent (10%) are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

(Want a free daily e-mail update? If it's in the news, it's in our polls). Rasmussen Reports updates are also available on Twitter or Facebook.

The national survey of 1,000 Adults was conducted on December 17-18, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Rasmussen...
Weren't they the group that had Romney winning by 9% the day before the election???

Majority Now Favor Major Gun Restrictions

A new CNN/ORC poll taken in the wake of the Connecticut school shooting finds that a narrow
majority -- 52% -- of Americans now support major restrictions on owning guns or an outright
ban on gun ownership by ordinary citizens. Further, 43% say the shooting makes them more likely
to support more gun restrictions, up 15 points since the January 2011 shooting in Tucson, AZ.

Said pollster Keating Holland: "All of those numbers are much higher than they were in a CNN poll
conducted in January, 2011, indicating that the tragedy in Connecticut may be affecting more
Americans more intensely than other recent attacks."

Key finding: There is a significant gender gap, with 62% support for major gun restrictions among
women compared with 41% among men, and an even larger partisan gap, with nearly 80% support
among Democrats but only 42% among independents and 31% among Republicans.

So what?  So if the majority of people support speech restriction we restrict speech?  Ridiculous tyranny of the masses argument.  Just annul the bill of rights then.

Cicero wants an RPG, and he's hoping that the 2nd amendment will justify his desire to blow things up.

Of course restrictions on guns are perfectly legal within the confines of the 2nd amendment.  You can own
a shotgun, but you can't cut the barrel down below a legal length.
You can own a semi automatic rifle, but not a full auto rifle.
Cic likes to carry law to it's most ridiculous limits.

States can regulate guns(10th Ammenment)not the federal government.  The constitution requires the federal government pass an ammendment.

It's not ridiculous box, it's the laws of the republic.  But telling this to a person that defends the total disregard for the 5th Ammendment, I don't expect you to understand that.

The National Firearms Act of 1968 (NFA) defines a number of categories of regulated firearms. These weapons are collectively known as NFA firearms and include the following:

Machine guns—this includes any firearm which can fire more than 1 cartridge per trigger pull. Both continuous fully automatic fire and "burst fire" (i.e., firearms with a 3-round burst feature) are considered machine gun features. The weapon's receiver is by itself considered to be a regulated firearm.

Short-barreled rifles (SBRs)—this category includes any firearm with a buttstock and either a rifled barrel under 16" long or an overall length under 26". The overall length is measured with any folding or collapsing stocks in the extended position. The category also includes firearms which came from the factory with a buttstock that was later removed by a third party.

Short barreled shotguns (SBSs)—this category is defined similarly to SBRs, but the barrel must be at least 18" instead of 16", and the barrel must be a smoothbore. The minimum overall length limit remains 26".

Silencers —this includes any portable device designed to muffle or disguise the report of a portable firearm. This category does not include non-portable devices, such as sound traps used by gunsmiths in their shops which are large and usually bolted to the floor.

Box your commentary on this issue is a big part of why nothing gets done on this issue. I've read most of the replies from some of the most "conservative" members on this board and they are willing to comprise. Yet you are name calling them and associating them with lunatics. A happy medium can be reached on this issue, but with people spewing stuff like yourself, you are flaring the paranoia of responsible gun owners and pushing them in the corner of the "fanatics" you claim to detest. Let's work together on getting guns out of criminals and crazy people's hands, and find a way to get rid of guns that can kill large numbers of people quickly. Guns for self defense and hunting can and should be protected. Anyways, there is my two cents.

Finally a voice of reason and common sense.

Thank you.

There are in fact things that can be done.

Yes, there are plenty of unconstitutional laws passed over the last century.  No declarations of war, extrajudicial execution, warrantless wire taps, compulsory health insurance.  That I can't argue.

Many states already make it clear that as the owner of the gun, you are responsible for how it is used and who uses it.

Stupid people may get charged when their gun is used to kill.

This brings up the carry concealed issue. Since the gun owner is responsible for his gun at all times, the safest place
he can keep it is in his own possession.  Leaving your guns somewhere else is very dangerous.

Run a search of my posts... I've posted many times... I support the 2nd amendment and I support Good
gun laws.

Had the NRA been a faction of reason, they could have most of what they say publicly that they
want in America.
IMO, the NRA isn't at all interested in gun safety.  They represent Gun Producers
and Chemical companies... never Americans.
The only thing the NRA really wants is more gun sales... regardless of the consequences.

saying the NRA should be more responsible for gun safety is like saying the government should be in charge of your
healthcare.....

both are personal choices.....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Obama: "The US must lead by example."

Drone after drone.

Your words: "Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over expecting different results."

The war on terror is the insanity driving the world to world war 3.

You can only win a war with peace.

Viet Nam score:

Guns=won nothing
Peace= won the war

How long have you been obsessing about your "hippy days" and Vietnam?  It seems to be a recurring
theme and you mention it often.    Peace Won The War??? Really???
After the US left Vietnam, the north and south continued the war... then when the north finally
prevailed, they entered into a war with Cambodia... and while that was still fresh, they were at war
with China (and kicked China's @ss)...
Over 30000 Vietnamese and Chinese soldiers died in short but fierce war fought at the two nations'
borders in 1979.

So this "PEACE" you posted about... exactly when did "peace win that war"???

Peace won the Viet Nam conflict, not a war,  by withdrawing and refusing to continue it.

As soon as you refuse to be involved you instantly win.

It's a simple formula that the US refuses to accept.
