U.S. Suicide Statistics (2005)
Suicide Methods

Method
Percent of Total (32,439 suicides)
Number of Suicides

Firearms
52.1%
17.002

Hanging, strangulation, suffocation (even Cicero's Belt)
22.2%
7,248

Poisons
17.6%
5,744

All other methods
8.1%
2,643

Since more than half of all suicides use a gun... Cicero's "belt Lobby" must really suck... unlike
the NRA who promote a gun for all occasions!

Talk about promotion of guns.  The U.S. military is the ultimate NRA advocate.  I wonder of the 52% that commit suicide, how many were veterans.  Here is a shocking statistic.

Quoted Text
6,500 US Military Veterans Commit Suicide Every Year

Startling figures, which show the real death toll of the US's military campaigns, have revealed that servicemen and women are far more likely to commit suicide once they have left the forces than are killed in battle.

The report concludes that while only 1 percent of Americans serve in the military, the suicide rate of veterans accounts for a fifth of the overall total in the US.

It adds that soldiers in service take their own lives once every 36 hours as well as to the 18 veterans who commit suicide every day.

In comparison to the 1.72 deaths per day as a result of the Americans fighting in Afghanistan or Iraq, it would appear servicemen are far more likely to die by teir own hnads after their tour of duty.

Box, if your 32K suicides per year is correct, that means 20% of those suicides are military veterans.  What a shame!  And you suggest mandatory service for all Americans.

Now for the 48% that commit suicide by means other than a gun, is that acceptable and you don't care to ban or highly regulate those item to prevent those suicides?

That is over 18 veterans a day committing suicide.

Out of the daily average of 87 suicides per day.

Adam Lanza gets counted as a suicide, right?

And Spengler, the fireman killer?

The 911 hijackers?

Less than 4 percent of all suicides are murder/suicides, And yes over 90 percent of them involve firearms.

There were an estimated 1,382 murder-suicide deaths in 2011.

This is within the standard range of estimates for murder-suicides.

Of the 1,382, less than half were suicides and the rest were homicides.

register with $27 in it... is shot to death by a fleeing robber.

Ah there it is folks don't defend yourself or your property, just give in to the demands of the person robbing you. If you get killed in a robbery situation it is your fault not the robbers. I love how you put in "a fleeing robber" like he did no wrong

The NRA is in the business of promoting gun sales... they promote the "FEAR" that sells guns and
they do a very good job of it.

They don't have to do a damn thing, all people have to do is read comments like yours and listen to the media to know the goal is to eliminate the 2nd amendment.

Without a car many people won't die or kill others.
Suicide is intentional homicide. Guns are not required.
A lock on all medicine cabinets would save lives too.

Very good box!  Now maybe you understand your rationalization for wanting to regulate guns on everybody for suicides caused by mental illness.(mental illness is the cause - not a gun) You shamelessly use suicides committed by mentally ill people to argue for regulating guns on the HUGE MAJORITY that are not mentally ill or suicidal.

There are 300 million people in America, there are about 250 million guns, and you argue regulating guns because of the 17K that used guns to commit suicide.  Now do the math box, what percentage of 17K of 300 million?  Not downplaying the tragedy of suicide, but statistically speaking, based on your argument, 17K would be a rounding error.  It doesn't even come close to being considered an epidemic.

My reasons for regulating guns has nothing to do with suicide.  The suicide facts are also true but not the
reason that I think America should have reasonable gun laws.  Good gun laws would most likely reduce the
number of gun suicides, so that would be an added benefit.

"Good Gun Laws' may also increase other ways of suicide.  It may increase bridge jumpers, jumping into traffic, or since they do not have access to guns, it may lead to an increase of suicide by cop, since cops have guns.

If a person is willng to put a loaded gun to their head and pull the trigger, I'm pretty sure whatever is going through their mind at that time, that they will find a way to end whatever pain and misery they are dealing with.

What "good gun laws" may also do, is prevent a woman from purchasing a gun to protect herself from domestic abuse or a rapist, or a stalker.

George H.W. Bush Resigned Lifetime NRA Membership Over LaPierre Fanaticism

“On April 13, less than a week before the Oklahoma City bombing, Mr. LaPierre signed a fund-raising letter
asserting that President Clinton’s ban on assault weapons ‘gives jackbooted Government thugs more power
to take away our constitutional rights, break in our doors, seize our guns, destroy our property and even
injure and kill us"

In response, George HW Bush resigned from the NRA.

Following is the letter of resignation sent last week by former President George [H.W.] Bush to the National
Rifle Association: May 3, 1995

Dear Mr. Washington,

"I was outraged when, even in the wake of the Oklahoma City tragedy, Mr. Wayne LaPierre, executive
vice president of N.R.A., defended his attack on federal agents as “jack-booted thugs.” To attack Secret
Service agents or A.T.F. people or any government law enforcement people as “wearing Nazi bucket
helmets and black storm trooper uniforms” wanting to “attack law abiding citizens” is a vicious slander on
good people.

Al Whicher, who served on my [ United States Secret Service ] detail when I was Vice President and President,
was killed in Oklahoma City. He was no Nazi. He was a kind man, a loving parent, a man dedicated to serving
his country — and serve it well he did.

In 1993, I attended the wake for A.T.F. agent Steve Willis, another dedicated officer who did his duty. I
can assure you that this honorable man, killed by weird cultists, was no Nazi.

John Magaw, who used to head the U.S.S.S. and now heads A.T.F., is one of the most principled, decent
men I have ever known. He would be the last to condone the kind of illegal behavior your ugly letter charges.
The same is true for the F.B.I.’s able Director Louis Freeh. I appointed Mr. Freeh to the Federal Bench.
His integrity and honor are beyond question.

Both John Magaw and Judge Freeh were in office when I was President. They both now serve in the
current administration. They both have badges. Neither of them would ever give the government’s “go
ahead to harass, intimidate, even murder law abiding citizens.” (Your words)

I am a gun owner and an avid hunter. Over the years I have agreed with most of N.R.A.’s objectives,
particularly your educational and training efforts, and your fundamental stance in favor of owning guns.

However, your broadside against Federal agents deeply offends my own sense of decency and honor;
and it offends my concept of service to country. It indirectly slanders a wide array of government law
enforcement officials, who are out there, day and night, laying their lives on the line for all of us.

You have not repudiated Mr. LaPierre’s unwarranted attack. Therefore, I resign as a Life Member of
N.R.A., said resignation to be effective upon your receipt of this letter. Please remove my name from
your membership list. Sincerely, George Bush"

Geez, I never knew that.  I'm not an NRA member, but now you bring this to light, I may have to become a member.  And now that I know Mr. NAFTA and Mr. Gulf War statist George. H.W. Bush resigned his membership, that give the organization even MORE legitimacy.

Thanks Box!

LA GUN BUY BACK PROGRAM

Yesterday's LAPD gun buyback was so successful that two-hour waits and gift-card shortages were reported.
The department says it picked up 75 assault weapons as part of its no-questions-asked effort that saw
$100 dollar cards handed out for handguns and long guns and $200 for the kind of rifle used in the
Newtown tragedy.
The LAPD says 901 handguns, 698 rifles, 363 shotguns ...AND TWO ROCKET LAUNCHERS will also be destroyed.

You know what I found ineresting about this?  If there are still unsolved gun crimes, wouldn't this be a perfect opportunity to have the evidence destroyed AND get paid for it?

And like an idiot you believed it, these were spent AT4 tubes which are legal to own, Mohawk Army and Navy has one on display   I bet all those evil assault weapons were nothing more than airsoft guns, what ever real guns were turned in were probably grandpa's old hunting rifle or shotgun. No rocket launchers were recovered, don't buy into the BS people all they got were plastic tubes

Henry is posting out of his butt again!

Answers to
(1) Guns in some situations SAVE LIVES... in others they take lives they were intended to save.
(2) No... "Your" opinion of what the 2nd amendment means is flawed.
(3) That's not my view... Those are your words, not mine, and I've never posted that view.

I think some on this site are blinded by their own agenda so badly, that they read their FEARS into
the posts of others.

My view is the same as the MAJORITY of NRA MEMBERS:
(Posting for the 3rd time in this thread)
Quoted Text
According to a poll conducted in May by Republican pollster Frank Luntz, NRA members, overwhelmingly
support measures typically described as “gun control:

1. Requiring criminal background checks on gun owners and gun shop employees.
87 percent of non-NRA gun-owners and 74 percent of NRA gun owners support the former,
and 80 percent and 79 percent, respectively, endorse the latter.

2. Prohibiting terrorist watch list members from acquiring guns.
Support ranges from 80 percent among non-NRA gun-owners to 71 percent among NRA members.

3. Mandating that gun-owners tell the police when their gun is stolen.
71 percent non-NRA gun-owners support this measure, as do 64 percent of NRA members.

4. Concealed carry permits should only be restricted to individuals who have completed a safety
training course and are 21 and older.
84 percent of non-NRA and 74 percent of NRA member gun-owners support the safety training
restriction, and the numbers are 74 percent and 63 percent for the age restriction.

5. Concealed carry permits shouldn’t be given to perpetrators of violent misdemeanors or
individuals arrested for domestic violence.
The NRA/non-NRA gun-owner split on these issues is 81 percent and 75 percent in favor of the
violent misdemeanors provision and 78 percent/68 percent in favor of the domestic violence restriction.
