Christmas Didn't Start With The Birth Of Christ:
AN ANCIENT HOLIDAY
Quoted Text
The middle of winter has long been a time of celebration around the world. Centuries before
the arrival of the man called Jesus, early Europeans celebrated light and birth in the darkest
days of winter. Many peoples rejoiced during the winter solstice, when the worst of the winter
was behind them and they could look forward to longer days and extended hours of sunlight.

In Scandinavia, the Norse celebrated Yule from December 21, the winter solstice, through January.
In recognition of the return of the sun, fathers and sons would bring home large logs, which they
would set on fire. The people would feast until the log burned out, which could take as many as
12 days. The Norse believed that each spark from the fire represented a new pig or calf that would
be born during the coming year.

The end of December was a perfect time for celebration in most areas of Europe. At that time of year,
most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter. For many, it was the
only time of year when they had a supply of fresh meat. In addition, most wine and beer made during
the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking.

The church put the celebration of the birth of Christ in that time frame to essentially bury what was a Pagan holiday.
There were Celebrations before that, but for different reasons....To say that CHRISTmas, which is the "birth" of Christ (although not date accurate) started before the actual birth of Christ is just plain silly and incorrect.

this has gotten w-a-y out of hand with this ridiculous rhetoric!!!
I don't need the government's permission to tell me if I can say merry Christmas.
I don't need the government's permission to tell me if I can have a nativity scene in my front yard.
I don't need the government's permission to celebrate the birth (or death or resurrection) of Christ.
I don't need the government's permission to call a 'tree' a Christmas or Holiday tree.
...and last I knew....there isn't a law on the books that says I can't.
I mean really folks...........get over it!!!!

I celebrate my nephews birthday that falls on December 25th.  Since it falls during a pagan holiday celebrated 2000 years ago, my nephews birthday is a pagan celebration.

I'm always amazed by folks who think their being FORCED to say 'happy holidays', when actually
the reverse is true.  People who want to say Happy Holidays are being coerced into being politically
correct and saying Merry Christmas.

IMO, it's just one more diversion by the Rabid Right to keep their base focused on nonsense issues.

FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US!
(It's as valid a Christmas celebration as any of the others)

Disagree....when public gatherings are directed NOT to use Merry Christmas, then they
are being forced to say Happy Holidays.
When schools REMOVE the words Merry Christmas from all activities, then they are being
forced to use Happy Holidays instead....and on and on and on!

No one ever stopped people from saying Happy Holidays or insisted they remove those words
from publications or events or that they could not say those words.

I guess it depends on weather you consider "MERRY CHRISTMAS" is a religious phrase, or a secular one.
If it's really about the birth of christ... then it's religious.
I prefer 'separation of church and state'.

No you don't...You support the state mandating religious institutions offer contraception coverage in the health insurance they offer.

I guess it depends on if you interpret it as a religious statement instead
of a recognition of the Holiday. There are many interpretations out there
about how the Holiday started and was named. Christmas is Christmas in
so many countries, and they have no war of words going on over it....only in
the U.S. is this such an issue.
Quoted Text
"Countries in which Christmas is not a formal
public holiday include Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Bhutan, Cambodia,
China (excepting Hong Kong and Macao), Comoros, Iran, Israel, Japan, Kuwait,
Laos, Libya, Maldives, Mauritania, Mongolia, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Pakistan,
Qatar, Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tajikistan, Thailand,
Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Yemen."

In some of them Christmas is being celebrated, despite not being a public holiday,
but more for marketing and gift-giving than for religious reasons, as these countries
do not have a Christian majority - i.e. Japan.

You insist on posting the outrageously, ignorant thinking of extremist liberalism.

Christmas DID start with Jesus.  The pagans who celebrated winter solstice rituals did NOT think that they were celebrating Christmas.  They were celebrating whatever they called the winter solstice in their culture.
Even as the Church subsumed the timing of and parts of those solstice rituals, the Christians of the various cultures knew that the old rituals (which were never considered Christmas) had taken on a new meaning enrched with the essence and presence of Christ.

The Constitution never mentions the phrase "separation of church and state" and explicitly protects the right of EVERY person to exercise his or her freedom of religion an d expression.  The Constitution forbids Congress and government from passing any law that restricts the free exercise and expression of religion.   Churches, synagogues, mosques and their faithful have EVERY RIGHT to exercise and express their religion publicly in EVERY part/place of our country.  The Constitution restricts the government -- It does NOT restrict the religion.

Yes... they offer contraception coverage for those employees who don't follow the religious
beliefs of the institution.
Say if it were a Muslim institution, the employees would not be forced to follow the religious
beliefs of the Muslim religion.

Ok...so you reiterate that you don't support separation of church and state.  The church must offer a product the state mandates.
