if 'real' background checks were to be conducted, and based on mental stability....ALL military and law enforcement folks would be banned from owning a firearm!!

they are 'trained' to be violent and to kill at will and most government issued military folks return from active duty with PTS or some form of a government created mental disorder!

better becareful what ya wish for.....disarming those 'trained to kill' will be disarmed next!!
and don't kid yourself if you think otherwise!!

You talk about lame stream media....
how about LAME A$$ STUPID POSTINGS?
all would be banned becuase of mental stability????
trained to be violent and kill at will????

Are you for real!!!!!!!! You cannot be serious!!!
Were you ever in the Military?  What branch and when?
I want to know how you were trained to be violent and kill at will and how this all caused

Yea, that's a big problem... home made guns are responsible for what percentage of murders???
5%?   1%???  -.0001%???

So should we ban blunt objects and knives, both kill more people then assault rifles....or does that not fit your agenda, yeah that's what I thought.

I suppose that is true... some one wanting a machine gun could find a way to get one.  It would be
expensive and difficult to find... but with enough money and enough time they could probably find one.

Rifles and fully automatic conversion kits are not difficult to find. You are wrong.

You just seek to create a new black market and expand the prison system.

Soldiers aren't trained on how to use deadly force?  You weren't trained on how to engage an enemy offensively opposed to defensively?

Wouldn't box's favorite example Tim McVeigh be reason to restrict weapons from those that have been trained to kill most efficiently?  If Sandy Hook is evidence for restricting gun ownership of certain weapons for peaceful citizens, then OK City should be  evidence to restrict weapons from those most proficient at using them.

You would DEADLY FORCE to defend yourself, military training or not, right...so that is lame correlation.
I was not trained to be VIOLENT AND KILL AT WILL...even you should be able to tell the difference
between that and deadly force.

Invading Iraq was not a defensive use of force.  Those soldiers used OFFENSIVE deadly force.  They were not protecting themselves, they were eliminating their "enemy".  You don't set up military bases in a foreign country when defending yourself.

Fort Hood shooting is another example of military training gone bad.  How many examples of mass killing committed by military trained Americans before we start restricting their access to weapons?  It only makes logical sense.

Cicero should ask his dad for some advice on the military before he posts here.  It would save him a lot
of embarrassment.

Cic... much of military training is DEFENSIVE, but you have no idea do you!

I agree with you.  Much of what is trained is defensive, much of it is offensive.  I'm not sure if "shock and awe" is a defensive strategy.  But I'll ask my father.

You Wrote It

Soldier Proud of His Country

To the Editor:

My name is Kurt Myers. I
live in Vestal, and am presently
in the military service.
I
am scheduled to go to Viet Nam
in November
which has
given me cause for thought.
Today we "are a divided nation
. . . divided because of a
war nobody approves of.
It has been written: "In the
whole American experience
there has never been a conflict
like it. In other wars, the soldier
left with bands playing
and crowds cheering. In this
one, he has gone off with a
sharply divided country behind
him.
"In other wars, a dead hero's
mother proudly hung a
gold star in her window. In
this one, she calls up the telephone
company for a private
listing, lest some anonymous
voice intrude on her sorrow
with: 'He got what he deserved,
he was only a paid
k i l l e r . ' " Exaggerated? I
doubt it.
I received literature on this
war from the State Department.
The literature is fact,
and the war is fact, but we
still don't accept it. We sit
back day after day and say we
should pull out of there . . .
this war is useless.
Today will bring tomorrow,
and tomorrow will bring again
a proud country. I love this
country of opportunity. I am
more than proud to give my
life if necessary for such a
great country, and I can't help
but put it into words.

The government has a reason
for being in Vietnam, but
we the people of that government
won't accept it. Let's
forget ourselves for a minute.
Let's visualize ourselves as
underprivileged Vietnamese,
not as proud Americans.
Many would say, "Who
cares?" . . . because that has
been the self-centered attitude
of this nation.
It seems like we only live
for today,, and also only for
ourselves . . . not as a unit,
but thinking of- our own personal
problems.
"Ask not what your country
can do for you; ask what you
can do for your 'country."
Were these words spoken in
vain? Are we so intelligent
that we are ignorant as to
what is really going on around
us?
Are we as great a nation as
we visualize ourselves to be, if
we remain uncertain about
this issue without united purpose
. . . which is not the case
of our enemy.
The North Vietnamese feel
that they have taken our temperature
and read all of our
intentions correctly. They feel
they have been proven right
on a number of assumptions:

ONE—That - conventional
bombing wouldn't be able to
destroy the ability of the
society to keep functioning.

TWO—That for good international
political reasons, the
U.S. would not use the atomic
weapons.

THREE-That the U. S.
wouldn't invade the North.
FOUR—Eventually, because
of a combination of plane losses,
international pressure, obvious
military failures and domestic
pressure, the U. S.
would have to stop the bombing
in the North. Therefore,
they take the cessation of
bombing as a partial victory.
Once we accept the fact that
we are in Vietnam and we
aren't getting out until this
small country can pull for itself,
we will have unity of purpose.
Is that too much to expect?
This country has "been affected
by demonstrators, draft
dodgers and draft card burners.
Like I said before, they
are so "intelligent" that they
are ignorant of the simple
facts.
They, like myself, have been
born into an era of peace.
They have had it so good that
they don't want to mar their
good fortune or waste their
lives fighting for ... should I
say their country?
They have had so much
freedom and opportunity in
this country that they have
taken it for granted. So I, for
one, am waging a cold war
against the delinquents that
are trying to divide this country
that wants to help an underprivileged,
third rate nation.
If you're any kind of an
American, you just might
think it over . . . I did.
KURT MYERS.

Jury acquits Utican of charges

A U.S. District Court jury sitting in Albany yesterday acquitted a Utica man of
charges stemming from a scheme to defraud the Oriskany branch of the Oneida
National Bank.

Thomas Brindisl. 38, 2 Powell Ave., Whitesboro. was found innocent of charges
he conspired to defraud the Oneida National Bank and five counts of aiding and
abetting branch manager Lance Myers in the misapplication of bank funds.

Myers was convicted last month of three counts of conspiracy in the loan fraud
scheme, which resulted in a loss of about $250,000 to the bank.

Brindisi's lawyer, Frank Policelli, said the jury returned its verdict after deliberating
for about six hours.

Myers didn't profit, lawyer says
By ANDY ARMSTRONG

An attorney for former Oneida
National Bank branch manager Lance
R Myers told a US. District Court
jury yesterday that Myers did not profit
from a fraudulent loan scheme at the
bank, and should not be punished for
errors of Judgment.
Myers' attorney, James Kernan,
said his client "may have been young
and inexperienced, and he may have
made mistakes, but he did nothing
criminal. Lance Myers is an honest
and truthful man."
Federal prosecutors have charged
Myers, 29, of 62 Whitesboro St., Yorkville,
with three counts of conspiracy,
citing his alleged role in a scheme that
resulted in a loss to the bank of approximately
$250,000. Myers was manager
of the bank's branch office in Oriskany.
His co-defendant, Laurence Martin,
24, of 741 South St.. Utica was charged

with one count of filing a false statement
on a loan application.
The case goes to the jury today Ten
of the other 12 defendants accused of
related crimes have either been convicted
or have entered guilty pleas.
Myers was originally charged with
89 counts of banx embezzlement and
conspiracy, but Assistant U.S. Attorney
Joseph Pavone said the government
is asking for convictions on only
three counts oT conspiracy. The prosecution
dropped 10 of the 69 counts
before the trial began, he said
Kernan said the prosecution's key
witness. James Calabrese. should be
on trial instead of Myers Calabrese,
27. of 206 Roosevelt Drive, Utica, was
allowed to enter a guilty plea to one
count of conspiracy. Pavone told Judge
Neal McCurn that Calabrese had
agreed to assist the prosecution
Kernan said Calabrese testified
"with the rattle of jail bars in his ears
He sold his testimony for 30 pieces of
silver

It's not Lance Myers who should be
at the defense table, but James Calabrese,"
Kernan said. "He could have
been charged with 12 forgeries, but he
was not" He also said Myers never
told successful loan applicants that
they need not repay the bank ,
Pavone, summing up for the prosecution,
said the number of loans that
went into default at the Oriskany office
soared after Myers left the bank's
employ in July 1979. The loan scheme
began in January 1977, Pavone said,
when Calabrese fell behind on his payments.
Myers agreed to approve a
number ofloan applications for friends
of Calabrese, Pavone said. He said
Calabrese got some of that money.
"It was like a snowball rolling down
a hill. It grew into a monstrous amount
of loans,' Pavone said.
Arthur Bellino, 27, of 2031 Baker St.
Utica, accounted for 35 of those loans,
Pavone said. Bellino was subsequently
found guilty of defrauding the Oneida
National Bank.

You conveniently skipped around my post and the content....why, becuase
it doesn't fit for you? You took "violent and kill at will" and spun it to deadly force.  REALLY???????
I was not trained to be VIOLENT AND KILL AT WILL...even you should be able to tell the difference

AttacKed as Insane

To the Editor:

This letter is in answer to
the letter by Kurt Myers
which was printed in The Evening
Press on Sept. 6; _
Mr. Myers states, "Today
will bring tomorrow and tomorrow
will bring again a
proud country." He fails to
state, however, in that time
thousands may be killed and
billions wasted on an outrageous
defense budget.
He says the government has
a reason for being in Vietnam.
Do we remain there to keep
the military-industrial complex
alive and thriving?
This country is the home of
the free and the brave where a
man is called "black person"' at
home and a freedom fighter in
Vietnam.'
Mr. Myers says he wants to.
aid an underprivileged, third-.
rate nation.I think he can best
help this nation by refusing to
help perpetuate the war machine
^hich is devastating the
land and murdering the people
of Vietnam.
We are supposedly fighting
in the name of self-determination
but allow none to our own
poor. I think all the sane
people in the U.S. are united
in the purpose of peace.'
He writes of the U. S. being
a self-centered nation. I ask
him to remember VISTA, the
Peace Corps, The Tom Dooley
Foundation and all the other
organizations which employ
thousands^qf volunteers who
ask nothing more than to-be
able to serve their brothers.
Are they wasting their
lives? I don't think so. I ask
Mr. Myers to remember one
more thing as he proudly and
nobly marches off to kill Cong.
"What you do unto the least of
my brethren you do unto Me*"
The war is wrong but because
of Kurt Myers and others
like him it has gotten way
out.of band and is even yet
growing.

The smartest thing ever posted by Cicero... He had no knowledge of a subject, and he is going
to ask some one who does have some first hand knowledge for advice.
(I doubt he will take that advice, but at least it's some progress)
