ALBANY, N.Y. -- State Police have released the name of the man they are looking to question in
connection with the stabbing of a trooper on the concourse of the Empire State Plaza on Sunday.
Officials are asking anyone with information on the whereabouts of David Green, 18, to call
(518) 474-5330.

State Police said Trooper Rodney Smith was checking a man's identification on the concourse
around 3:15 p.m. Sunday when the man stabbed him in the neck with a steak knife. There was
a brief struggle, but the trooper was able to fend off the suspect who took off with the trooper's radio.

Trooper Smith - a 15-year veteran of the State Police - called for help with his cell phone and
remains in stable condition at Albany Medical Center. He is expected to make a full recovery.

State Police said Green's address is not known, but he has ties to the Grand Street area in the
City of Albany.

Any reason as why the officer confronted him in the first place? Was he panhandling, selling drugs? The way the officers talk about it is that he stabbed him for no reason.

Never said it was, the first story said the man confronted him but then why would the cop ask for identification, doesn't make sense.

Yea... a cop asking a homeless man for identification... it's the cops fault he got stabbed in the neck.  I
understand your position, you've stated your views on the issue many times.

Yea... very suspicious... as you posted... "it just doesn't make sense"!  Why would a cop ask a homeless
man for identification???  Sounds like the cop was asking for it.
You've made yourself clear on this issue on several occasions... I understand your position

I don't know tell me why a cop would ask him for identification, was the man doing something wrong, if not then there was no need to ask am I right.

Box I understand Henry's confusion of the incident, and no one said it was the cops fault

I was listening to talk 1300 and they were saying that the guy and the trooper were having a conversation and the guy said he was new
to the area and then he pulled out the steak knife, stabbed the trooper and took his radio.

No mention of the trooper asking for ID.

I'm thinking the trooper asked for ID, then radioed in the guys name and I bet the guy has warrants and he stabbed the trooper then
grabbed the radio and took off.

At least the trooper had a gun to protect himself.  If this happened to John Q Public that is not permitted to be armed, the trooper would have arrived after the fact and filled out the report at 80k per year.

A troopers safety is not my concern.
