So are you saying that some people are just plain ignorant and lack class? Yes?

Yes - as you said, if it were Mohammad, people would be in jail.

And did ya notice, it's all the "newer" users that are doing it.

DEMS at board of elections are saying that Mertz was in their office the end of last week and has grounds for a serious challenge to endorsed repubs.  But, here's why Mertz loses this election, he doesn't have what it takes to go for the jugular, it's that simple.  You'll hear the party b.s. line and clean campaign b.s., but REALLY JOHN ~ COOME ON! ~ let's see some real action!

Incumbent battles his own
GOP town board member in Rotterdam working to unseat party colleagues

By LAUREN STANFORTH, Staff writer
First published in print: Thursday, September 10, 2009

ROTTERDAM -- A Republican Town Board incumbent is leading a charge against his own party to unseat two board incumbents and Rotterdam's supervisor in Tuesday's primary.

State attorney John Mertz, who was not endorsed by the Rotterdam Republican Committee, organized a slate of candidates in an attempt to block County Legislator Joseph Suhrada from getting on the town board, and to push out current Supervisor Republican Steven Tommasone.

Mertz, who has served on the Town Board almost six years, also got enough signatures for himself and three candidates to run on an independent party line in November called the No New Tax Party.

Mertz claims his protest of Tommasone's 2008 tentative tax increase of more than 16 percent got him kicked off the ballot before the committee even voted this year.

Republican town Chairman Gerard Parisi said the committee didn't endorse Mertz because his past performance on the board has been "erratic, controversial and disruptive."

Parisi also said Mertz "is a chronic liar."

The No New Tax Party is promising zero town tax increases for the next two years, and is opposing Tommasone's efforts to create a municipal ambulance service that would create a special tax district in Rotterdam.

IMHO Parisi is a big part of the problem with Rotterdam's administration, too many backroom deals.

First, why didn't parisi elaborate on what constitutes a chronic liar? AND, second, why didn't the reporter ask him to elaborate?

I agree with shadow that parisi just may be part of the problem with the rep party. IMHO

An attorney and politician(Parisi) calling a fellow attorney and politician(Mertz) a chronic liar.  Didn't they both get their law degree and enter politics so they could be paid to be chronic liars?

Typical of what passes for journalism in these parts. Where's John Mertz's comments? Another one sided article. John deserves credit for starting the NO NEW TAXES PARTY and for his opposition to the proposed ambulance tax. John Mertz will finish first-AGAIN.

The first thing the new Town Board should do is to find another law firm to represent the town and eliminate the backroom deals that only benefit the politicians but forget the taxpayers.

I often wondered if it was ethical or not to have a town's political party chair who is also the town's attorney. Couldn't that be a conflict of interest?

Ethics? In Schenectady County? What dat?

The reform GOP candidates Mertz/O'Connor are the ones against the ambulance tax and for a new town attorney. This is about more than town politics.

Most of the residents in this town complain about the high taxes so I hope they do something about it in November and vote for the party that promises No New Taxes.

Ethics!!!! A lawyer calling a lawyer a liar???? Technically they dont lie....they tell half-truths and hope leave the rest to us ignorants
or they assume we are all lawyers......but, as voters we are judges.......

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.
