The U.S. Marshals are looking for a man suspected of raping two victims, including a wheelchair-bound woman while her family slept feet away, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Michael Hawkins, 29, is accused of raping a Schenectady woman in her apartment on June 10, 2012, after her family went to bed, the U.S. Marshals said. The victim, who uses a wheelchair and is mentally challenged, reported the crime the next day.
Hawkins was charged with aggravated sex abuse in the first-degree and other crimes due to the victim’s disabilities, the U.S. Marshals said, but he disappeared until he sexually assaulted a Rotterdam woman on Nov. 8, 2013. In the second case, Hawkins was charged with first-degree rape.
“The Schenectady and Rotterdam Police departments, along with the Marshals, have dedicated countless man-hours during this fugitive investigation,” said U.S. Marshal David McNulty. “With the public’s help, we are confident Hawkins will be arrested.”
Hawkins is a 5-foot-9-inch white man, approximately 160 pounds with brown hair and eyes. He has a one-and-a-half inch scar on his face, a burn scar on his right arm and a Grim Reaper tattoo on his chest.
The U.S. Marshals say Hawkins has personal ties in New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Oregon, California and Florida, but he may have left the Capital Region after the incidents and his whereabouts are currently unknown.
Friends told authorities that Hawkins, nicknamed "Zombie Mike" for his poor hygiene, could hide anywhere and survive on scraps. Hawkins has worked with traveling carnivals in the past, and could be working anywhere along the East Coast or in Ohio, Tennessee or Puerto Rico.
A reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for information leading directly to Hawkins’ arrest. Anyone with information is urged to contact the nearest U.S. Marshals office or the U.S. Marshals Service Communications Center at 1-800-336-0102, or email usms.wanted@usdoj.gov.
