Ellis Hospital goes into lockdown after report of situation

By WRGB Staff |Wednesday, April 6th 2016

SCHENECTADY - Officials with Ellis hospital say the facility went into lock down on Wednesday morning.

The facility went into lock down just after 9:30 am, after reports of a situation in a unit of the hospital.

Hospital officials say staff followed protocol, locking down the facility after a knife holder was discovered on a visitor by staff. There was no knife at the scene.

Schenectady Police say a man was interviewed and released without charges.

The lock down was lifted at around 10:30

I was in the day surgery center today - everything got locked down, nurses, doctors and patients all locked together till it was cleared.  It took about an hour, but all outpatient elective surgeries were delayed for the duration.

I was there at the time too. Everyone in the office, patients and staff, were rushed into back rooms. All the doors were locked. It took about an hour. Everyone was calm and initially thought it was just a drill but as time went on we knew that there was no way the hospital would leave patients unattended to for so long unless something was really going on.

Most likely the knife owner pull the knife/device and left it in his/her car and kept the sheath/scabbard attached to their belt. Someone spied “DANGER” and rather than just asking the individual if they would leave or remove the item from sight they hit the panic button….

I carry a knife all the time, I just don't have it in plain sight. I also used to carry a multi-function tool around in a sheath that was clearly labelled Leatherman, people knew it wasn't just a knife, but it had a knife. We live in paranoid state these days but to quote from the Kinks “Paranoia, the destroyer” you can't live life that way it is not healthy.

So when it says a "knife holder was discovered on a visitor by staff", what exactly does "discover" mean?  What did the staff discover if not a visitor holding a knife?

DISCOVER:
find (something or someone) unexpectedly or in the course of a search.

This is clearly either....

a) an over reaction to nothing

or

b) poor journalism

I have heard that staff on one floor saw a very large knife (think Crocodile Dundee toe size) and so they contacted security. Security called the lock down but then the next unit that saw the man said that there was no knife. It was unclear if he ditched once the lock down was called, or if the first people did not see correctly and there never was a knife.

Over all I think it was an over-reaction because no one claims that the man was acting in a threatening manner.

Speaking of Ellis, I was in the ER VERY recently, had tests done, doctor came in with diagnosis and what medication he was going to prescribe. An hour
later he comes back and tells me that the test was someone elses, I did not have the condition he told me.

Then he wanted to send me for a chest xray, it had been done hours before, he said he'd be right back and didn't come back for hours.     Then another test I had done they could not find it, even though the
tubes were labeled and sent to the lab.

So who the hell knows if any of the tests they didn't lose are mine, scary shi*  : (

Try understanding what you read DIMWIT!
KNIFE HOLDER....aka "SHEATH".
They didn't "discover" a visitor HOLDING A KNIFE....they discovered a visitor with a KNIFE HOLDER!!!

So an update regarding my "trip" to Ellis ER. I follow up with my primary doctor. I ask him for a copy of my bloodwork. He says he cannot give it to me I have to call Ellis and get it from them. I call Ellis they email me a medical records release. I mail it to Ellis. Now I get a letter from a company called
Verizma located in Colarado with an access code to go online and see the status of my request. I do that and its lot of mumbo jumbo. I call the toll free number and on hold twenty minutes, got disgusted and hung up. As I am in a flare with my multiple sclerosis the ER doc and my primary dr tell me
to see my neurologist. I call and because I missed an appt ( I cancelled a week in advance) because my Dad ended up in Ellis for three weeks, I am told
the neurologist sees me as a non compliant patient and refuses to see me anymore. I cannot get my medicine that I was doing well on : (

This new "health care" system is SOOOOO broken.
