Did anyone else find this in their mail box yesterday? I called the Rotterdam Town Hall today and no one seems to know the specifics. They just said that it was being handled by a private company. I have already talked to the DPW, the Highway Dept, and the supervisor's office. Someone is suppose to call me back. I have questions and concerns regarding this procedure.

The town has been blowing smoke up our sewer pipes for as long as I can remember. |

I have no problem with them testing sewer lines. What I do have a problem with is the inconsistent information in this letter. The letter states that it is non-toxic, but also states that it may cause respiratory irritation. It goes on to say, that if this smoke gets into your home, it should clear in a few minutes with proper ventilation. So to me that means someone would have to be home to at least open a window. But yet it states that no one has to be present. And why do it in the middle of the winter when properties are closed up? Then at the bottom of this letter, it states that they would appreciate it if we would mention to our neighbors in case they didn't receive a notice. I want to know what this non-toxic substance, that can cause respiratory irritation, is. This letter was very poorly written, in my opinion. No one has called me back yet. |

A woman named Lisa from DPW called me back. I asked for the chemical make up of the substance that was going to be used. She didn't know. I told her of all of my concerns regarding the respiratory irritation and the ventilation. She suggested that I call the company directly with my concerns. I suggested that she, or someone from town hall call since they initiated the service. She said that she was going to email my concerns to the company that would be preforming this test. The company they are using is Barton & Loguidice. Lisa said she would call me back by the end of today. |

The MSDS information should have been included in the letter to identify the chemicals they are exposing the residents to. |

Lisa called me back and sent me an email (picture of the bottle) of the chemical they are using. I contacted the manufacturer, who explained a lot, and they will email me the MSDS information. Lisa said that this was being done now because it was being paid for through a grant. She said that you have a certain date by which the grant is available. |

This is the chemical that they use. The Hurco rep stated that the concern is mainly if sewage is coming into your home along with this chemical/smoke. He also stated that if you are not home when the test is being done, there will be no way to know if any chemical/smoke/sewage entered your home. Lisa did also mention that she has been getting other calls regarding this from other residents.

Of course it's your responsibility to call the contractor the town is paying to pump smoke into your home. Why would you think it's the responsibility of a town worker?TIC |

I did mention that to Lisa also. They really didn't know hardly anything about this entire procedure except that it was being done and paid for by a grant. She did call the private company who is doing the testing after I suggested it to her. They are the ones that sent her the picture of the chemical being used. I knew they wouldn't do it, so I took it upon myself to call the chemical representative myself. |

Here is the MSDS information. It was emailed to me from their representative. There are a total of 4 pages. I'm rather surprised that the town didn't request the MSDS information, since it involved their residents. You will notice that on the very first page, it states:
Quoted Text
"Even though these tests don't identify any harmful quantities of toxic compounds, you will need to warn your customers of dangerous sewer gases that may be traveling with the smoke".
I don't believe the town offered that warning to it's residents.

Just a comment to what seems to be Joann's concern here. If your home plumbing is working correctly smoke will not travel through the pipes past the water traps into your homes living space. If any smoke does travel up from the sewer line into your living space then you may have a larger issue including plumbing leaks, and this means sewer gasses are also entering your home and that should be addressed immediately. All modern home plumbing systems have vent stacks that not only allow proper venting of pipes for water flow, but also vacate sewer gasses out of the system via the stack which is usually found on your roof. Any gas/smoke that is pushed through the sewer system will take the path of least resistance and vent out, and in any properly maintained home the roof stack will be that path.
Quoted Text
Sewer gas problems can also be caused by plumbing vent pipes that are clogged. This can happen in old homes where a cast iron vent pipe gets clogged by years of rust scale that falls off the inside of the pipe and clogs a 90 degree bend in the pipe. Tennis balls, leaves, and all sorts of other debris can clog plumbing vent pipes. When a vent pipe is clogged, the replacement air needed by the system will get sucked into the pipes through a fixture inside the house. When a large amount of water is placed into the drain pipes by a toilet or a powerful washing machine pump, it can readily suck the water out of a nearby bath tub trap or even a kitchen sink trap. Once this happens, sewer gas immediately enters the room through the dry fixture trap. To slow evaporation from fixture traps that are not used on a frequent basis, fill them with water and then slowly pour four ounces of mineral oil into the fixture or floor drain. This mineral oil will evaporate far more slowly than water and the trap will remain wet for many months.
