GE ending battery manufacturing in Schenectady

Created: 11/13/2015 12:51 PM WNYT.com
By: WNYT Staff

General Electric is shutting down its Durathon battery manufacturing operation in Schenectady.

A statement from the company says the Durathon battery is not cost-effective to produce compared to other battery technologies.

A GE spokesman says 34 salaried positions will be eliminated as a result. Forty-five hourly employees will be moved to the steam turbine operations in Schenectady.

Statement From General Electric

GE is ceasing Durathon battery manufacturing and engineering operations in the energy storage business in Schenectady, NY.

The energy storage industry continues to evolve, and though Durathon battery technology is well-suited for certain applications, today it is just not cost-effective enough to manufacture at a competitive price point compared to other battery technologies.

We will continue supporting our customers and servicing the current Durathon installed base.

GE is still committed to the energy storage business, and this announcement is in line with our strategy of becoming a full energy storage solutions provider, rather than simply a battery manufacturer. Moving forward, we will continue helping our customers provide flexibility to the grid.

The mayor gave GE a 100% tax exemption and the city is improving.

GE takes the taxpayers' money and runs and McTHIEF isn't going to do a dang thing about it!   Will McTHIEF take away their tax exemption?

The city, county, town and plex worked together to keep this all hush hush until AFTER the election!

Quoted Text
,,,With the announcement of Friday’s job cuts, the battery plant will be left with about 100 total employees, Noel said.

GE ....which opened in July 2012 inside an old turbine factory on the Schenectady campus. At the time, the company pledged to create 450 jobs by 2015 .

GE received more than $25.5 million in (money from the taxpayers) federal tax credits to open the plant.

The (taxpayers in New York) state provided $15 million, with $12.5 million coming from Empire State Development and $2.5 million from the New York State Energy Research & Development Authority.

The (taxpayers of) Schenectady County Metroplex Development Authority also gave GE $5 million in funding for project costs
...

Thanks to McTHIEF and plex, especially, giving GE this whopping 100% tax exemption for 10 years,
it will cost LOCAL taxpayers AT LEAST $70 million!!!   That is MORE THAN the combined total from the fed, state, and plex combined !!!!

The total combined tax rate for the homeowners in the city of Schenectady is about $43.   Based on the portion of GE that is in the city, and based on the current assessment of $65 million, the cost to CITY homeowners (most who have incomes under $40,000) will be AT LEAST $28 million over 10 years, that would assume there will never be any tax increase over the next 10 years.

The current assessment of the portion of GE that lies in the town is $132 million.  Based on the current county and town tax rates combined of about $11.22  for people in Rotterdam who actually are taxpayers, that will mean a cost of AT LEAST $14.8 million over 10 years IF there never is a tax increase, but we already know it's a fact that that the town taxpayers ARE being hit with about a 9% tax increase for 2016.  (NOTE, for town taxes, I have only included the town and highway tax rates, not the various lighting, fire, etc).

Also based on that assessment of GE in the town, I believe it is exclusively within the Schalmont school district, therefore those who actually are taxpayers in the school district, they will pay, based on the current school tax rate of just shy of $20, at least $26 million dollars over 10 years assuming no tax increase.

Will the federal government, the state government, Metroplex, and the city and county require GE to repay that money given to them from the taxpayers since GE's promise of just 3 years ago has completely failed?

I'm sure you can provide a copy of the post where I claimed I now what's best for business.

I'm sure you can provide a copy of the post where I claimed that GE must continue making the product that has lost money.

Just want to know if you think it's wonderful that the taxpayers forked over TENS OF MILLIONS to them and they won't have to pay a damn red cent back.

And will McTHIEF and plex take away the tax exemptions that local homeowners (who actually ARE TAXPAYERS) are paying for?

And why was this kept hush hush til AFTER the election.

Another teller of fairy tales.  I only quoted what the mayor's BIG cheerleader has said.  Then I went and got proof of the big tax handouts from the homeowners courtesy of McTHIEF and his cronies.

So read your own constant dribble ranting and you'll see where you KNOW BEST!!

Excuse me, please provide the post where I said that they must be FORCED to continue making that product.  Sure, continuing to make the product may not be in GE's best interest.

But tell me is it in the best interest of the homeowners (the highest taxed in the state on houses that are the highest over-assessed in the whole state of NY)  to be required to continue to pay GE's property and school taxes?

Since we (who actually pay taxes) have shelled out tens of millions to GE, and since the homeowners in the city and Rotterdam, and the county are going to be forced to fork over at least $70 million dollars to cover GE's tax bill while GE failed at meeting the jobs, etc, all I want to know is if the McCarthy is justified in continuing to make homeowners pay GE's tax bill, and if so, why?

They have plenty of material.  They have facts. Anyone can see . We are all so stupid.

Except they are faux facts- all the faccts always add up to  a whacky obsession over a mayor - really ?   hillarious

Ah, so homeowners in the city paying close to $70 million for GE's taxes is just Chinese arithmetic and doesn't mean anything?  So what you are saying is that it's just fine and dandy that homeowners pay GE's taxes?

Obsession over a mayor?   What  mayor gave GE the tax exemption?      So you are saying that the homeowners in the city should be happy about having the highest over-assessed homes in the whole state of New York.

Are you saying that the mayor violating state law in refusing to reassess is OK?

No, frankly we're saying that we're tried of trolls, like you.

I agree.

MC posts facts, generally VERY well vetted.

I do not sanction the strong tone however...

But the facts they post are pretty hard to dispute.
