Schenectady is launching an investigation into the actions of police who became embroiled in Washington County politics.
The commissioner who oversees the Schenectady Police Department wants to know whether they crossed the line into abuse of their power when they came to Cambridge and White Creek this summer. They are believed to have been off duty.
The police tried to take control of the Washington County Conservative Party’s nominations. They campaigned to get a Schenectadian to represent Washington County Conservatives at the upcoming party convention. That’s where the party representatives decide who gets nominated for the November election.
The officers’ effort failed. In last week’s primary, residents chose their own party chairwoman over the Schenectady resident.
But some residents also said they were not pleased by what they saw as unseemly interference from outsiders.
Residents in Cambridge and White Creek said they felt intimidated when Schenectady police knocked on their doors. Officers were trying to get them to sign petitions supporting Schenectadian Kristin Florell. Enough people signed petitions that she got onto the primary ballot.
Police are not allowed to be involved in politics while in uniform or on duty. Residents did not say the police were in uniform, but said officers identified themselves as police.
That appears to be a gray area in election law.

Maybe lots of Schenectady city cops live up there, not that it would matter; with such a great role model for a chief who won't have anything to do with living in the city, paying taxes, subjecting himself and his wife and children to the problems in the city, I wouldn't be surprised if many lived outside of the city limits, and outside of county limits. |

Let's wait and see what the investigation turns up. Whether in uniform or on-duty, I see no reason to identify their occupation while being involved in political activity.
MC - - Chief has been living in the city away from his family. Something I would not do in order to keep that job.
Ironically, the fact that many officers live outside the city has limited their ability to vote in city elections. |

cops have enough power....they should not have to have power over the political system too....which is what their intent is!
hell....if they can infiltrate local town boards....they will have TOTAL control!!!
that should be a scary thought for everyone....imo |

Chief originally said he would "stay" at his mother's house on days he worked. Has ANYONE verified that? He's getting paid by the taxpayers, he has a duty to contribute as a taxpayer himself and to expose his family to the same things that those who pay his salary are putting up with. But the bigger part of the issue with the chief refusing to be a taxpayer by living in the city is the mayor is big hypocrite. The mayor stated he was going to make ALL his department head to live IN the city. He forced out his former assessor because she would lived in the city, but then he allows his police chief, of all people, to avoid exposing his family to life in the city, and to avoid paying the highest taxes around in a city that is the most highest over-assessed in the whole state of NY. The mayor is telling the police chief he does not have to "invest" in the city, but he will pay him his lavish salary. |
