Six Schenectady parks to get city-funded overhauls

By Haley Viccaro  July 29, 2015

Marion Porterfield, Vince Riggi and Scott Asmus volunteer to clean up Jerry Burrell Park on Hamilton Street as part of Earth Day activities in April 2014.

SCHENECTADY — Six city parks will get an upgrade as part of the Recreation Advisory Commission’s plan to rehabilitate parks using city money.

The 12-member commission decided to distribute $250,000 in capital funding among Jerry Burrell Park, Quackenbush Park, Woodlawn Park, Hillhurst Park, Riverside Park and Steinmetz Park.

“We tried to hit all areas of the city,” said Richard Patierne, chairman of the commission. “We doled out the money as evenly as we possibly can. We’re looking at it from a priority standpoint and which parks need it the most.”

At a glance

The following work is planned for these Schenectady parks with $250,000 to be provided by the city:

Jerry Burrell Park

•  Circus wagon needs to be repaired, set in concrete

•  T-swing needs to be refurbished

•  Spider web climber needs to be repainted

•  Carpet needs to be placed in park

Quackenbush Park

•  Swing seats need to be replaced

•  Benches need to be replaced

•  Replace fence along Education Drive

•  Replace merry-go-round

•  Paint basketball hoops and poles, add nets

•  Clean up trash

Woodlawn Park

•  Remove jungle gym

•  Remove four-way seesaw

•  Add toddler equipment

•  Create standardized signage

•  Need carpet, mulch in playground area

Hillhurst Park

•  Add more playground equipment

•  Add bicycle racks

•  Fix pool cement

•  Fix or remove seesaw

•  Fix water fountain

•  Repurpose tennis courts

Riverside Park

•  Remove or retighten Clifford spring ride

•  Remove or repair fencing by swings

•  Repair or repurpose tennis courts

•  Resurface basketball court, repaint lines

•  Add more signage

•  Replace missing swings

Steinmetz Park

•  Pull out sandbox

•  Add new grills

•  Mark trails

•  Add soft ground carpet

•  Add motion-sensor lights

•  Repair basketball court

• Remove seesaw

The commission previously visited all 24 city parks and took note of improvements that need to be made. The six parks chosen earlier this month need the most attention, Patierne said.

The city can't just abandon or sell off its parks.  State law would require them to replace - acre for acre - any park land that is taken out of the park system.   Therefore, it makes sense to keep up and improve the parks that the city already has.  I am particularly happy that there is a proposal to expand Orchard Park in Mont Pleasant.

So just keep the grass mowed and that's it.

Are YOU going to pay to keep up the parks and improve them?   Easy to talk when YOU do NOT pay the bill!!!!!!

Where do you think the people of the city are going to get the money from for all these parks?   Can you answer that?  (watch fellow posters, TOTAL SILENCE)

The people of Schenectady already pay the highest taxes around.  On top of that, they have to pay for damages to their cars resulting from the failure of the city to keep neighborhood streets in shape while spending the taxpayers' money on UNNECESSARY stupid fancy lighting on Erie Blvd.  Yeah, I know you're reading this and thinking to yourself that I don't know what I'm talking about because Erie was not paid for by the city but by the fed govt.  Yeah, as if some federal employee randomly decided to re-do a road somewhere in the U.S. and blindly put a push pin into a map and it turned out to be Erie Blvd.   More likely it was people like the mayor talking with fed reps saying "we want nice streets downtown for our billionaire cronies..." and the deal was in the works.  That, as opposed to saying "we want money for the streets in the neighborhoods."

No matter whether it's the parks (of which there IS an EXCESSIVE number of them) or anything else.  It comes from the pockets of the people of the city!  It's still THEIR MONEY, but the city chooses how to spend the taxpayers' money and it chooses things to benefit their cronies as well as things that are nice but not as critically necessary as other services.

It's really time you grew up and learned what real life is like.  It's nice to be living with two rich mommies so you don't have bills to pay.

Looking forward to seeing the plans for Orchard Park in Mont Pleasant.
Suggestion:    The city should consider a railroad theme -- since the proposed park is literally across the street from where the Mohawk & Hudson's 1st station was located and is tied to the first regularly scheduled inter-city passenger rail service in the U.S.  The original was scrapped and melted down for metal during the Civil War.  A replica of the locomotive, the DeWitt Clinton, is owned by the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI.  Unfortunately, the museum has such a large collection that the DeWitt Clinton replica is only displayed sporadically.  At one time, they were even entertaining offers from outsiders to buy it and display it in another location.  Similarly, the Steam Town NP in Scranton has a number of Schenectady built locomotives in its collection and some are potentially available for purchase by a railroad preservation group.
We had been working on an "Engine Hill" project or more correctly "series of projects" for Mont Pleasant 10 years ago.  It is something that should be looked at again.  ------  Just a thought.

There you go again.   Cheering for the city stealing more from the financially struggling taxpayers.

When are you going to buy a house or even rent and live IN the city??????

You have suggestions?   Do you think the mayor reads these boards?  Why don't you go to a council meeting and speak with your suggestions?   Oh, that's right, you are too scared to go into the city.

Naturally, a 50+ year old man who had not yet become an adult and does not pay taxes in the city would, of course, support increasing the taxes on the homeowners for more parks while continuing to cut ESSENTIAL services: like declaring snow emergencies, paving more roads, addressing the massively increasing crime, and failing to obey state laws regarding assessment of property.

DV, will you answer and tell us what will become of the city when all the homeowners have fled because they CANNOT afford the taxes????   How many times have you been asked that question and you have NEVER answered!

What a big (in more ways than one) loser you are.  50+ years old and not yet grown up to be a normal independent adult

Schenectady and Rotterdam should consider building a park in the Cheltingham Ave, Wedgewood Heights and Westside Ave area.

Well?????    Who is supposed to pay for building and maintaining?

Can you answer that question?
