Fast-food workers in New York state are about to get a big increase in pay. The New York State Wage Board recommended Wednesday an increase in pay to $15 an hour for fast-food workers at establishments with 30 or more locations.
If the increase is approved by the labor commissioner, it would gradually be phased in by Dec. 31, 2018 for New York City, and July 1, 2021 for the rest of the state.
We will have more on this story starting at 5 p.m. on NewsChannel 13 and at WNYT.com.

This in an economy where nine bucks an hour is considered a gift. So, the governor can appoint a wage board, and they can decide what workers get, by occupation? If this thing passes, the kids who work at the McDonald's near me won't have their jobs long, I'm afraid. Also, overlooked here, I know people who work at chains like sporting goods stores and so forth, some of them have some special skills, and they don'tget fifteen bucks, but more important, they only get part-time hours, and they don't even get a guaranteed number of hours. Try working and going to school when your boss keeps scheduling you to work days you have class, or combining two jobs when you keep getting no hours on your days off from your first job. I really think they want McDonald's to go out of business. Good luck to all the teenagers trying to get work experience.

McDonalds (and similar establishments) wont go out of business because of this.
What they are going to do is install automated cashiers that wont complain about not getting $15/hr.

I agree, especially since it is an industry most likely to employ kids on their first job. This is going to end up hurting more than it helps. I'd like to see better wages all around.
I'd be curious to see how many would be in favor of these wage increases when they realize it will cost each and everyone more to purchase the products. The businesses are not going to absorb the increases, that's a given. Don't get me wrong, I'm in favor of fair wages for jobs and increases based on performance, but not jumping wages by $$$$ instead of incremental and not tying it to no product cost increases, tasking businesses with productivity improvements,
JUST BECAUSE SISSY SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO...BUT HE THINKS IT DOES!!!!! JUST BECAUSE MC1 SAYS SO DOESN'T MAKE IT SO!!!!!
this was clearly just a government 'tax money grab'. the more money ya make.....the more taxes ya pay. so corporations will foot the bill, while gov almighty gives them tax loop holes, and the employers will be 'donating' more tax money into the the government system.
it's just a 'government tax money grab'.

I'm a proponent of raising the minimum wage, with that said, doing it for only one industry makes zero sense.
Good, pay every service you receive at a $15 per hour rate. Nobody is stopping you. Babysitter, lawn service, car washer. Give them all $15, hell, give'em $20. Let's hope China raises their minimum wage to $15 U.S. Dollars per hour. That should help Americans see how absolutely broke they are.

But that's not SJW thinking. SJW thinking is that you are entitled to a living wage. That "You want fries with that" translates into $60k+ a year. It won't stop at $15. It never does.
Now, other than the fact that a company can eliminate positions with automation and/or raising prices to compensate, there is now another unforeseen consequence.....The workers, themselves.
Yup, they sure were happy to get that HUGE raise....Right up until the point that they find out that they are getting their Food Stamps/Cash checks/Section 8 either cut or outright eliminated because......*drum roll*......They make too much money!!!
So now those same workers who cried about not getting "A fair wage" are going to their bosses and going "Hey, can you cut my hours".
Where is this happening? Washington State.

You nailed it. I can't tell you how many Wal-Mart workers are complaining of the exact same thing.
Washington State - coming soon to YOUR state!

It was an especially long day and I needed a cup of coffee. The TV station has a coffee maker but, as anyone who works in media can tell you, newspapers, radio stations and television operations are notorious for bad java. So up the road I went to a coffee shop. I won’t tell you which one because I don’t want to get anyone in trouble, not that it matters because the guy probably doesn’t work there anymore.
I was the only one at the drive-thru which increased my chances of getting a cup of joe and making a clean getaway. I talked to the invisible voice at the menu board, drove around and the folly began. He started with, “I’m out of coffee”, then explained that this was good news because he’d be making me a fresh batch. I was on the clock so I asked how long that would take and he responded, “Um, at least two minutes but probably no more than five.” When he saw the unease in my eyes he said, “Two, two minutes.”
We made small talk and then he cut me off to answer his personal cell phone. I could tell it was good news on the other end because he started to do a little dance, literally. He then flung a pack of coffee filters toward the wall, uttered a word I can’t repeat and said, “I won’t be working here anymore, that was a job I was up for. Which is great because I’m not really good at this.” I wanted to say, “As evidence by the fact that you run a coffee shop and don’t have coffee” but I behaved.
Ten minutes later (not two) he poured my coffee and asked me what I meant by “extra cream”? I said, “Take what you normally put in a coffee and add more. That’s extra” He gave me a thumbs up. As I drove away I couldn’t help but think of the governor and his state wage board’s plan to pay fast-food workers $15 an hour.
I promised myself I wasn’t going to write about this topic because no matter what I say I know I’m going to tick someone off. That is seldom my goal unless I’m talking about Tom Brady. Cheater. Anyway, back to the wage.
Telling people they don’t deserve $15 an hour for serving french fries is like telling a 7 year old they don’t deserve a trophy because their t-ball team came in last place. You can do it but ready yourself for tears. The last thing I want to do is hold people back financially, heck if I had a magic wand, I’d raise everyone’s salary 50 percent.
Here’s my problem with it. A rising tide should lift all boats and this does not. The minute you single out those in the fast food industry as underpaid you unfairly leave behind so many others.. In just the span of a half mile drive I passed three places that prove my point. I saw a fire house and wondered how much the EMT’s made? I’m guessing many don’t earn $15 per hour. How about the aide at the nursing home I passed next? Changing dirty sheets, helping the elderly bathe and feed themselves; surely that’s worth as much as the guy making McNuggets. Then I drove by a hotel and wondered how much the maids were paid to clean up after disgusting travelers who treat their rooms like a trash bin?
Let me just state an indisputable fact. There are lots of people who went to college, earned a degree, are paying off huge student loans and are in professions that don’t pay $15 per hour, at least to start out. What is the message this sends to them?
There’s another concern. I don’t think for a minute the fast food industry is going to sit back and eat this increase. Corporations are corporations and bottom lines are bottom lines. I think they’ll slash employee hours to keep payroll under a certain number. I’m sure they’ll lay people off in order to make budget if this pay increase becomes a reality. We all have smartphones and are adept at touch screen technology. I predict it won’t be long before you walk or drive up to a kiosk, tap a few buttons and order your own meal yourself completely eliminating the need for a counter person. My point is I worry this wage hike could hurt the very people it seeks to help.
Lest you think I’m cruel or “just don’t get it” please know I worked plenty of dirty, hard jobs in my day. Mowing lawns in a cemetery, busing tables at a restaurant, stocking produce at Price Chopper, a clerk at Stewart’s; trust me I did it all and for minimum wage. Not making a fortune at these endeavors was the rocket fuel that got my butt to school every day and made me want to do better, work harder and succeed. Like I said, I think everyone should make more but raising the tide isn’t fair when you leave 98% of the boats tied to the dock.

Dear Stupid,
While it might not take place state wide until 2021, Seattle, WA. already has it place and NYC is already on a fast track to put it in place.
