NEW YORK (AP) — Trading was halted on the New York Stock Exchange in the late morning because of a technical issue.
The halt occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Eastern time Wednesday.
The exchange said in a statement that it was experiencing a “technical issue” that it was working to resolve as quickly as possible.
Before trading was halted, U.S. indexes were lower as investors worried about China’s ability to stem a stock market slide.
The Dow Jones industrial average was down 215 points, or 1.2 percent, to 17,561.
The Standard & Poor’s 500 gave up 24 points, or 1.2 percent, to 2,057. The Nasdaq was down 73 points, or 1.5 percent, to 4,924.
European markets were broadly higher as talks continue on Greece’s debt woes.

Trading in all securities has been temporarily suspended on the New York Stock Exchange. The exchange posted the news on its website, saying "additional information will follow as soon as possible." The halt began at 11:32 a.m. Eastern. In a statement the NYSE said it was working to restore trading activity. "We're currently experiencing a technical issue that we're working to resolve as quickly as possible. We will be providing further updates as soon as we can, and are doing our utmost to produce a swift resolution, communicate thoroughly and transparently, and ensure a timely and orderly market re-open," said a NYSE spokeswoman via email. Early indications are that a computer problem or glitch is the cause; CNBC and others used the term “technical issue.” Coincidentally, United Airlines had to ground all flights for an hour Tuesday morning due to computer issues, as well.
Two U.S. officials told NBC News that there was “no indication that computer issues at NYSE & [United] are related or a cyberattack.”

Chinese markets halted trading too after a big sell off. Coincidence? Or planned so that the Chinese market would be the only one effected?
