SCHENECTADY — An investigation is underway into a fire at the Schenectady High School Saturday afternoon.

The fire seems to have started in a garbage can at the loading dock behind the school’s cafeteria a little after 1 p.m., according to Deputy Schenectady Fire Chief Vincent Krawiecki.

The school was unoccupied and there were no injuries reported from the fire.

Krawiecki said there was “heavy fire” in the eave above the loading dock when the fire department arrived, but called the damage “superficial.”

“It’s basically superficial except for water and smoke inside the kitchen,” he said. “No fire got into the building.”

So far, he said, a cause has not been determined. He said a fire investigator had been called in and the area would be checked for any cameras that may have been recording when the fire started.

“There was no one here at the time, so no one saw anything that I know of,” he said.

Superintendent of Schools Larry Spring, who was at the scene, said the school was “pretty lucky that [the Fire Department] got here quickly and got it under control.”

He said summer school starts Monday, but after consulting with the Fire Department, he thinks there should be “absolutely no problem starting” classes then.

The guy in the picture looks like a grown man. A grown man with nothing better to do on a national holiday than start a fire in garbage.
Good job catching him.

What is the difference between men/male and female that make arson sort of a male dominate crime ?

Maybe it begins with frying ants. I thought everyone knew how to fry ants- except when I got older I realized  girls werent as fascinated by fire.
