I think this is normally the case, bt, I just don't think it comes up much because people who live in cities don't usually have an interest in going off the grid. Also I personally believe that many people today are brainwashed into not even believing you can possibly do things for yourself. I know some people who are of the opinion that hanging your clothes out on the line is somehow dirty. Also saving scraps for compost, some people find that disgusting. Slightly off topic, anybody know anyone who is going with that solar power company that's been going around? Solar City, I think?

What is the purpose of declaring that he's a veteran?
Does that make him somehow more deserving of better treatment by the government?
The term veteran was added to increase the hype.
'I' didn't.....it was the article that did. Question is.....can 'anyone' live off the grid? just askin'.

As of 2013, current estimates are that 1.7 billion people in the world live off the grid. According to Home Power Magazine, at least 180,000 families are living off the grid in the United States and that number increases each year.

its not such a hot deal you basically rent your roof to them you get credit for the power your (their) panels put into the grid. just read the fine print a couple times.

we dont have solar...but 2 people we know do....and you are correct the way it was explained to me.... these panels collect energy that goes directly into the GRID. the homeowner is given a credit for having panels on their roof, to collect energy FOR THE GRID. the folks we know also pay a monthly fee of about $50-ish for the panels. also folks need to add these panels to their homeowners insurance. that is just some of the stuff we were told...not my own personal experience. basically....it sounds like a scam...but i could be wrong.

We chose Vivant Solar. They put the panels on the house for free it cost us nothing. The energy generated from the panels goes to the grid, and we pay a significantly reduced rate to use that power (50+% less than buying from National Grid directly).
If there's ever a need to replace the roof, they'll come in and remove the panels, store them if necessary and re-install for a one time $495 fee - which is covered by my homeowners insurance if the roof needs to be replaced because of damage. If I use one of their contractors to replace the roof, the $495 becomes $0, and the replacement of the roof fee is guaranteed to be equal to or less than the quotes I receive.
Basically, we've paid nothing for the panels, they're keeping snow OFF the roof, we're generating more electricity than our home uses (it's cool to see the meters spinning backwards) and our electric rates are half what they were before using just National Grid.
PLUS - this was the selling point for me - all my energy bills get a tax credit of (I think) 25% every year. So, if my electric bills are $300/month ... x12=$3600/yr, I get a $900 cash rebate on my taxes, every year through .. I forgot, 2020?!! Ka-Ching!
If anyone is interested, I'll gladly give you the name of my sales rep that handles Schenectady and Saratoga counties - she was awesome to work with. I'm not getting a commission, just extremely pleased with their services!
We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works.
My sister has had solar on their detached garage for several years in Vermont. They purchased the system (quite expensive then, but the prices have dropped considerably since then). Their system runs the meter backwards at 100% of the RETAIL price for electricity. On a cold sunny winter day, they produce all, or most of their electric needs. The system purchase originally was subsidized by state funds.
