Quoted from MOONGLOW
How soon we all forgot about the previous assessor whom the Mayor told her she must live in the city.   She did not comply, and was let go for this non-compliance.   Are others let go for not moving into the city as required by city law?

The entire issue is dollars and cents.

Why pay out $40 million dollars a year to people who live, shop and pay property taxes outside the city.

The residency law is designed to keep the tax money local.

This is America....YES?
Land of the free...YES?
You can't FORCE people to spend THEIR money where YOU/GOV ALMIGHTY wants them to.
That is insane!!!
This goes beyond dollars and cents!!!
Again.......people are (should be) allowed to live/rent/buy property and shop where they want!
It is a stupid silly ridiculous law and should be taken off the law books!!!

It is only stupid if you fail to understand the importance of the law.

If the law had been enforced as written, Schenectady would have had the half a billion county tax dollars that was allowed to be funneled out of the county, instead.

Across the entire country cities, towns and villages have similar residency requirements.

The ones that enforce the laws are not the ones close to bankruptcy.

I hardly doubt that Schenectady's money woes are due to residency laws!!!!!!!!
REALLY!!
Their money woes are due in part to the tax exempt state street and the over employment (wages/benefits) folks!!!

Stupid law!!!

THIS IS AMERICA!!
Freedom to choice where you live and/or work!!

Then "public servants" should read their job requirements and not accept a job with residency requirements.  They are free to choose a job that doesn't require it.

There is absolutely no upside to having city employees live outside the city, none, not any, zip. Whiny uppity civil servants who wish to dictate the terms of their employment are never, ever, the best candidate for the job. People are free to live wherever they want to already, just don't live on my dime and tell me you get to decide what YOU want. Move away, and keep on going, preferably way out of reasonable commuting distance.
The reasons FOR the residency law are numerous, and have been listed before, but those who want to do what they want to do don't want to hear them. Tough. Tough tough tough.
No area should be ruled over by outsiders.
I repeat, the only benefit in allowing the flouting of residency laws is to the crybabies who think they are too good to live here, yet want to partake of resident provided largesse. Screw that.

they do it every day in school districts.
they dictate to OUR children according to the dictate of Fed gov almighty and State gov almighty.
And they are paid by the taxpayers!!!
And MOST don't live remotely close to the district that pays them.

TAX PAID IS TAX PAID.....PERIOD!!!

No one, no how, no way should be told where to live.

You all sound like a mob encroaching on another American's right to live where they want.

As far as the city of schenectady residents....all you all do is bit@h bit@h bit@h....and continue to live in the sh!thole.

So will you all be happier and stop bit@hing if all city workers lived in the city? NOPE!
Do you folks HONESTLY think things would change? NOPE!
OF COURSE NOT!!

I guess the old saying is true....misery loves company!!!

Residency laws and telling people where they can live is just BIZARRE TO ME!!!

Stupid law!

Do I have to live in Niskyuna and pay Niskyuna school taxes to attend Niskyuna schools?  The problem is, the government exempts themselves from the mandates they enforce on everybody else.  Until they lift mandates on residents and give them the freedom to pay for the services they choose, then I say enforce residency.  What's good for the goose...
