Have you seen this one which states "Shop local,Eat local".  Now if they could only get all city employees who are required to, to "live local"(in the city).

In particular, the Schenectady city police chief.

More EVIDENCE that the  current mayor is NOTHING but a BIG LIAR!   Claimed ALL his department head would LIVE IN the city.

Shouldn't be just the department heads and city employees, it should also be EACH AND EVERY property owner, developer, business owner, who gets money from the taxpayers.

NO ONE wants to live IN the city, which is why King Phillip took the taxpayers money, and CONTINUES to take the taxpayers money to the tune of a whopping quarter of a million dollars a year, he fled the city.

And of course the mayor's BIGGEST (in more ways than one) cheerleader won't give the remotest thought to living IN the city, not even renting a room (you know, those "rooms furnished" ads).

why do city employees have to live in the city, when teachers don't have to live in the district they work in?
there are many many many....one lives in duanesburg and is a teacher in Averil Park. So the taxpayers are paying for her to work there....but she takes that tax paid money and shops and lives in Schenectady County. There are Mohon, Schalmont teachers who don't live in their district.

Hell...remember Nicki DeLeva? She works in the Schenectady School system and moved her and her son to ROTTENdam...so her son could have a 'better life'.

It's done all the time....everywhere!!

Maybe the lower level employees, I mean who cares if a clerk in a city office lives in Saratoga

But ALL department head should live IN the city.  Especially the police chief.   What is the basis for the mayor refusing to make his police chief pay the taxes that everyone else pays.

Guess the people of the city are not good enough for the police chief to live among and raise his family.

And for that Galesi CEO, for the millions of taxpayer money he's getting and the mayor refuses to make him live in the city as a condition for the lavish pay he gets at the expense of the city homeowners who will lose their homes if they don't give their money over to the mayor so he can give it to Buicko.

Some superintendents of schools don't live in their district! Some don't even live in the same county!

It doesn't matter what 'level'....a tax paid employee is a tax paid employee!!!

No one can be FORCED to live ANYWHERE!!!

This is AMERICA for God's sake!

some folks live where they do because of family, friends, medical issues...that can't be ALL changed just because of a JOB!!!

It's a silly law and shouldn't exist!

Absolutley!!! You should hire the best person for the job, based on qualifications not where they live.

Maybe so, but it's still a stupid law and should be abolished everywhere.

And btw we're not talking about Albany here.

Yes, best person for the job, but then the person hired, based on qualification, must be required to move into and live in the city.   If they are getting paid by the taxpayers, and they are imposing policy on taxpayers, and they are recommending and enforcing policy to hike taxes and fees on the taxpayers, then they should live IN the city AND pay taxes themselves.

That explains department heads.

Those that recommend and enforce policy that increases taxes must be made to feel the same financial pain that those who they impose taxes and fees upon feel.

A police chief should not police a city from 30 or 40 miles away, he or she should live among the people that he is policing.

I don't care about the clerks and the janitors and such. Though the trash collectors should live here so they could experience what homeowners do when they bang the cans, break them, and leave some behind.  The code enforcers should live in the city so they can experience what it's like to pay the high taxes that pay their salaries so they can understand what it's like to try to pay taxes and maintain a house when your home value is falling and you can't get to having equity in your home and can't get financing to make repairs when they cite people.

Agreed!!  Residency laws are stupid.  Especially school district residency laws.  Parents are forced to pay for a school and send their kids to it, even if the parents(the customer) think it's a failure.  If local governments can hire the best person for the job even outside the municipality, then residents should send their kids to the best school for their kids without being forced to pay for a school in their district.

Unfortunately residency law is a one way street.  God help the parents that send their child to a school outside the district they live in.  I think it's a capital crime.

I could care less if the Police chief, Fire chief, City Clerk, or any other City, Town, Village, County official lives in Timbuk-freakin'-tu, when they're hired or after they're hired. The only thing I care about is are they the best qualified for the job, and are they doing their job. If they're not get rid of them and hire someone else. And if the new hire lives in Boise Idaho and wants to work from there I could care less, just as long as they're getting the job done.

Residency requirements are bogus and bullshit. The Schenectady city clerk lives in the city. Is he doing the job you'd expect? Frankly the city has probably lost some qualified and competent people because of the stupid law, and instead we get stuck with the dregs. Ugh.

I assume you carry this argument to citizenship laws too?  As long as they are qualified?
