Updated: Wednesday, June 3 2015, 05:10 PM EDT SCHENECTADY - Police have taped off a section of a Schenectady street following a report of a domestic disturbance.
The Police Chief tells CBS6 that police were responding a call at a home on Michigan Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.
Police are using a megaphone, requesting that a person inside come out with their hands up. There is no confirmation that there is someone inside the home.
The Michigan Avenue is closed at California Avenue. Check back for updates.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
I was at that intersection an hour ago, and saw CBS6 there - checked their website when I got home... As the traffic was all messed up (as one would expect)
I was there too, had to do a detour to get home and then saw a neighbor so asked what was going on. yay, another fun incident within view of my childrens' bus stop. Love Schenectady!!
Wednesday, June 3, 2015 Man in custody after Schenectady standoff By Haley Viccaro
SCHENECTADY — A man was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after a nearly two-hour standoff at a house on Michigan Avenue in Schenectady. Police surrounded a home at 356 Michigan Ave. around 4 p.m. after receiving a report of a domestic dispute between Jeremiah Torres and an unidentified woman. Torres, 24, was in possession of a shotgun, police said, so Michigan Avenue was blocked off to traffic between Rutgers and Santa Fe streets as officers surrounded the home with guns pointed at the front and back.
Torres threatened the woman with the shotgun and made threats toward responding officers, police said. Police Chief Brian Kilcullen said officers questioned the woman at the scene.
An officer at the scene was talking to Torres — who was believed to be inside the Michigan Avenue home at the time — over a megaphone, referring to him as Jeremiah and asking him to come out with his hands over his head.
Two individuals, a man and a woman, were later taken by police and driven away in separate police cars.
During the standoff, information led officers to a residence on Rutgers Street, where Torres was taken into custody without further incident. Charges are pending.
A portion of Rutgers Street was also blocked off after the standoff on Michigan Avenue. A man at the Michigan Avenue scene, who identified himself only as Byron, said he was the landlord and rents the house to five tenants: a woman with two children and two males.

This was a domestic violence incident. Tragically, domestic violence can and does happen in EVERY community around the world.

When girls pop out babies, by different boys like it's pop corn, combined with drugs and alcohol and poverty and lack of education.....domestic violence will most certainly become part of the community landscape.

Of course not. The implication here in this post as well as many other subjects is that bad sh*t and all other social and political woes only happens in Schenectady, and IMHO that's a seems bit disingenuous. ....yes?

Agree.....but most folks here are concerned about the community THEY live in. and I also will say that there is complaint after complaint and personal attack after personal attack.....but no one is doing a damn thing except bit@h. one can only hope that folks start to go to their community town/city meetings and speak up THERE as well as here. one can only hope that folks are supporting their hopeful candidates. there are MORE THAN ENOUGH FACTS here to use.
I guess i'm just sick and tired of folks playing the victim CONTINUOUSLY!!!
IMHO

There is nothing a politician can do that will stop an angry person picking up a shotgun and threatening people. There is no law written on a piece of paper that will prevent someone's actions when they get angry. It's a moral problem, not a public policy problem. If there is evidence that your neighbors get violent when they get angry, find a way to protect yourself from that person. Cus the politicians aren't gonna protect you.
