That's an interesting chart. What's your point? That city planning commissions are clueless re: population growth?
I'd like to see a chart that details the drop in population as it relates to the steady decline of employment at Alco and GE. Might be interesting also to see how that affected property taxes during the same time period.
"I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix,"
It appears to be a 'projection' from 1924.....yes?
When the INSANE are running the ASYLUM In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule. -- Friedrich Nietzsche
“How fortunate for those in power that people never think.” Adolph Hitler
The chart was drawn in 1924 by a person from a firm located in St. Louis, Mo. Presumably, the firm was contracted to perform some kind of study for the city back in the early 1920's. What was the study? What were its results and recommendations? Were any, all or none of the recommendations ever implemented? And -- most importantly -- How is the study and/or this chart relevant - today - 90 years later?
Also, I would say that in the early 1920's there was a mood in the United States and in Schenectady that everything was growing, improving and that everything was Excelsior (the state motto - "ever upward"). That could explain the seemingly unreasonable assumption that Schenectady's population would grow by such greats for years to come.

They clearly didn't plan on Generous Electric bailing out. They clearly didn't plan on the enormous rise in Greed and political/union manipulation.. They clearly didn't plan on an economic downturn. They clearly didn't plan on the enormous rise in poverty. They clearly didn't plan on the enormous size of government aka taxes.
imho....it was pretty irresponsible to even TRY to project 100 years into the future. Hell....today's politicians can't even project into next month!!

the only thing they plan are government pensions/COLA's and future pay outs so the current budget is NEVER correct....

They didn't plan on the Great Depression or World War II or the invention of the microwave oven and frozen tv dinners ... my gosh .. they didn't plan on reality tv shows or that the Patriots would steal the Superbowl by improperly inflating their footballs.
Today's political leaders are just as good and/or bad as they were in the 1920's or any other time in history. Clearly, they had to depend on studies and charts like the one drafted by some goober from St. Louis in 1924 who assumed that population would grow by an unreasonably high rate for infinity. For all we know that goober from St. Louis was a pot smoking Libertarian snake-oil salesman .. you know .. like Ron and Rand Paul.

The point I was trying to make is that they predicted a half a million people would live here by today.
GE and ALCO committed suicide by inventing and building the infrastructure that would lead to the demise of the biggest manufacturing plants in the world 100 years ago.
They invent and developed mass transportation and shipping that allowed the jobs to be shipped to where labor is cheap.
The railroad killed the canal first, then manufacturing went on the chopping block when it became cheaper to ship from Mexico than to pay NY state wages.
They weren't off a little bit with their predictions, they were off by miles.
But they did hand out pensions and medical insurance for life by the truckload based on their own predictions.
Things would have worked out better if the other 450,000 people actually came here.
When it failed to materialize it turned into a failed Ponzi scheme.

So let me get this straight -- You actually believe that it would have been better if GE and ALCO had NOT invented all of the various things that they invented -- because if they did the other 450,000 people would have settled in Schenectady? How long would GE and ALCO have stayed in business if they had NOT invented anything? How many people would have come (or if already here would have stayed) then?
And you are saying that things would have been so much better off without pensions and health insurance.
Do you actually believe this crap or are you just high on some drug that the Libertarians want to legalize?

...he/she saying the government was like a leech on the back of those 'evil' corporations and sold our posterity to the devils.
planning for the future is not the government's best attribute here in Schenectady....they were blinded by the $$$$ and over extended the future of it's existence.

Sorry, I respect your opinion, but I ain't buying it. Your explanation is even more far fetched and speculative than the chart itself.

Nope - don't see him/her mentioning the government. The Libertarian is clearly blaming our problems on corporations for inventing items and for giving their employees pensions and health insurance.

Ah I get it, the old "corporate welfare" chestnut. Seems like a round about way to bring that up. Ok, guess I'm out of this discussion since I'm "freeloadin" off of all you working stiffs. See ya.

the government sits on the back of the corporations while 'feeding' the corporations their 'fair share' and then pretending that the corporations are the bad guys not paying their 'fair share' when in all actuality it's a house of cards....
