Looks like the mayor's code enforcement office might have issues.

Inspection done not even 24 hours before the fire.

Building inspector says results are not public information.  There have been numerous time in the news where the city is quoted in the news that a building has violations and is quoted as to the violation.

Oh, so a building that actually does pass inspection is exempt from
any catastrophe? It can't catch on fire? Do you even know what the
inspection covers and doesn't. Could something that is not required to
be inspected have caused the fire?

Just stirring the pot again....

Oh, and still waiting for you to confirm the Mayor lied about the weather
in that other chicken little thread of yours!

I would think in buildings that large with so many tenants sprinkler systems would be required and smoke alarms in every apartment etc ?

Downtown businesses aren't targeted to be driven out by the code enforcers.

I know you're too much of a gentleman to cuss here, so I changed your comment to reflect what you were probably thinking.

Oh, and a little bird told me this morning that the owner was not up to date on his insurance premiums. Not sure if it's true or not, but the "little bird" is privy to such info.

Two points to consider:

1) Even though one or both of the buildings was inspected the day before, that didn't mean that there was time to fix any violations that may have been found.  Furthermore, it has long been known that certain landlords will drag out their response to code violation citations then change ownership on a building which forces the municipality to start at square one again in the code violation enforcement process.  I don't know if that is the case with either of these two building but I don't think we should be so quick to point fingers at the city's building inspectors.

2) Both of those buildings are quite old so I am not sure if they were required to have sprinkler systems or may have been "grand-parented" in because of their age.  In my brief research, I have discovered that state regulations for sprinkler systems and other fire safety regs are, actually, of rather recent (last couple of decades or so) vintage.  And it seems likely that a building built 75 or more years ago would not fallen under those much newer regulations.

then that has to be investigated.....every building should be up to code.....grandfather or not......this happened because of that.......

and a law does not make it right...when people have lost their lives or are injured and have no way out......

too many laws are that way...old fogies laws.....not in this century..

Fire escapes = yes.

Re: jump, from what I understand the emergency doors were inoperable/inaccessible due to flames, heat and smoke.

The buildings were clearly built long before the current federal, state and local codes were adopted.  IF - it is the case that they were "grand-parented in" under codes adopted long after the buildings were built than TECHNICALLY the buildings would be legally compliant with those sections of the code.

Now, the newspapers have been printing accounts of the buildings being heated by numerous space heaters on several series of extension cords -- THAT would most probably be a seemingly serious code violation.

I would disagree with the contention that the laws are "old fogies laws."  More often the buildings, themselves, are way too old.  That is why in many cases it is much better to replace old, obsolete buildings with newer buildings.  Buildings that would have to meet ALL of the current federal, state and local regs and codes.

as an example.....many older businesses are not handicap accessible.
they are grandfathered in.
IF they sell the building....the new owners would have to bring it up to code.
So does fire safety fall into that same category?????....kinda scary thought....no?

In some cases, it is only if an older building is unoccupied for 1 year and a day or if it changes uses that is loses its grand-parented status.  That is is an even scarier thought because it is much more likely that there are old apartment buildings all across the state and country that occasionally change ownership but that can go on for years and years operating far below modern safety standards.
