#Breaking: Schenectady City Hall being used as a temporary shelter as crews continue to battle a massive fire on Jay St. Multiple people have been rescued from the burning building
Seven people have been taken to the hospital. One person is currently at Albany Medical Center with a broken back after jumping from the 5th floor. Another person was flown to the Westchester Burn Unit.
Firefighters believe one person is unaccounted for.
Roads around City Hall are closed for the day as firefighters continue to put out the flames.
How long will it take for the city to tear it down?

Official: Resident jumped from window to escape big Jay St. fire

Schenectady firefighters remain on the scene of a fire at 104 Jay Street that sent 7 people to area hospitals and 1 being unaccounted for after flames broke out at 2 a.m. Friday, March 6, 2015.
SCHENECTADY — Seven people were hospitalized after fire ripped through a multi-story apartment building near City Hall overnight.
Five people were taken to Ellis Medicine, one to Albany Med and another was taken to Westchester's burn unit after the fire at 104 Jay St., according to Schenectady public safety commissioner Wayne Bennett.
Bennett could not say if there were fatalities at this time, but he believes one person is unaccounted for.
"But we believe everybody did get out safely," he said.
When the Fire Department arrived on the scene, they rescued one person who jumped from the building.
It is unclear how many people were displaced who lived in the apartment building at 100, 102 and 104 Jay St.
Schenectady firefighters battle a multiple alarm fire at 104 Jay Street directly across from City Hall after flames broke out shortly after 2 a.m. Friday. Several residents escaped the fast moving flames.
People who got out of the building safely are now being housed at a church at 970 State St.
The fire originated on the left-hand side of the building and spread to the back over to the right side.
City fire crews are still on the scene, which is directly across from the main entrance to City Hall. Firefighters have had to contend with another bitterly cold night while fighting the blaze.
The blaze started around 2 a.m., Bennett said
News of the fire spread quickly. Nick Sgambelluri was working overnight downtown several blocks from the scene when he saw a friend's Facebook post about the fire.
He arrived at about 2:45 a.m. Pictures he took showed flames shooting from the upper floors and a ladder truck shooting water onto the flames.
"I've never seen a fire like that, to be honest with you," Sgambelluri said. "I haven't seen many fires, but it was certainly the biggest fire I had ever seen."
100 Jay St. had as many as 35 units, city records show. Newspaper records show 104 Jay St. changed hands in November.

Interesting that the current tax delinquent owner of 100 Jay who bought the building within the past couple years, is making their mortgage payments to the previous owner of the building, also tax delinquent.
Seems also no smoke detectors working and I read something in that story about fire escape. Obviously code violations. City doesn't have money to spend on code enforcement because it's spending money on it's millionaire political cronies downtown.
Next thing will be instead of going after the owners, the city will demolish them at the expense of the homeowners and then Metroplex will come in and build something at taxpayer expense and give the owner total tax exemption.
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

I hear they are getting ready to take it down as we speak. another parking lot?

If it is structurally unsafe than the only prudent thing to do would be to take it down. I would like to think that the nayboobs wouldn't be so low and scummy as to stoop to politicizing a tragic fire but .. I know them better than that .. they ARE that low and scummy.

I believe there are at least three people missing right now. One of the two buildings, 100 Jay St, had just been inspected and passed. pleaae, let us not forget that there are critically injured people, most likely a list of dead, people who have lost EVEYTHING and businesses destroyed. This is not politics, this is a tragedy.

Yes, it is a tragedy. One can only hope that the people who are missing were not in the building at the time of the fire and will turn up safe and sound someplace.

Whether it's a parking lot or yet another Metroplex project, naturally it will be at taxpayer expense.
Hmmm, city workers were in the building at 104 the day before the fire. Imagination is running wild
