We are not talking about states west of the Mississippi, we are talking about Rotterdam and its municipal water system...which until last year, was a $ 25 a year charge...it then tripled to avoid going above 2% on property taxes. If our total tax rate was even middle of the road for the rest of state, a metered water system might have merit, but its not... its one of the highest in the state...and in the Country. Usually when a municipality provides water, they also provide sewer...Rotterdam does not except for a very few. I've already spent $8000 on a rebuilt septic system because Rotterdam doesn't have sewers. I'll continue to pay $250 a year to get my system pumped out to keep it viable so I don't have to go through the process again.
For my tax dollars, Rotterdam doesn't provide much in services. The water meters can stay on the shelves.

That is why I posted the item about states west of the Mississippi where water is quite often supplied through PRIVATE companies and the trend towards privatizing water supplies is a growing one. So my post was quite relevant to the topic.
You state that municipalities often provide both water and sewer. Under New York State Law, only Cities are required to provide both water and sewer. Towns MAY provide water and/or sewer - through water districts and sewer districts -- but Towns are NOT required to provide those services. Towns aren't required to have a police department nor a fire department nor even a Receiver of Taxes. Technically, Towns are only required to have a Town Board, a Supervisor, a Town Clerk (who by law is the Receiver of Taxes unless a separate office is created) and a Superintendent of Highways. Towns don't even have to have a highway department -- they can contract that out to another municipality or the county.

Are you drunk, this town with its basic lack of any style has the worst planning department in the area and maybe even the state. No where does spot zoning happen with more regularity. The town not only looks shoddy in its business to residential mix, but our main thoroughfares are clogged during each commute. New/growing businesses are allowed to be put in places where they only add to the chaos, and developments including MDU's are allowed to be built with out regard for the strain already on municipal services.
Listen.....ROTTENdam in the last few decades has added malls, mid-sized big box stores and multiple residential developments and multiple mfh units....which should make taxes LOWER....not HIGHER!!!
ROTTENdam has not added ANY new services in decades... so no additional costs there?

Do you have a business in Rotterdam? Do you own any property in Rotterdam? The good, decent, hardworking people of Rotterdam are tired of not getting any value from all the taxes and fees we pay each year.
