Hard to leave when your house won't sell because of it being assessed at 50% or more of its actual market value. Hard to find a buyer who will buy a house in a city that is overtaxed, 5th dangerous city in NY, 11th dangerous small city in the country. For many they're stuck here not by choice.
Ah yes, the old we're victim's of the assessment argument. Don't you guys get tired of using the same old argument day after day. How about this, there's a guy who posts here who took a significant loss but did get out. That was probably a difficult choice. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet, swallow your pride and cut your losses. It sucks, but at least you won't be a "victim" anymore.
But what do I know I'm just a freeloadin', elderly hippie.

Are you having a acid flashback, 1st you said "Ah yes, the old we're victim's of the assessment argument", and then you go on to admit we should bite the bullet because we are victims. Do you have any good pot at least

I'll try to be a little clearer. I see the victim argument here all the time. I think it's a bogus position, but none the less if people do feel like victims, there are options. Moving out and taking a loss is just one. I don't see any contradiction there to be honest. Could be the crack I just smoked though has clouded my perception of my own words.
Uh, pot? Never touch the stuff.

Great piece and it shows that Schenectady is doing much better than its critics say it is doing. BTW - have you been to Rochester or Utica lately? Or even in the past say 15 or 20 years? I'd much rather live in Schenectady than either Rochester or Utica .. or God forbid .. Buffalo.

after reading the article,i think he should have left downtown to see the ALL the rest of schenectady, but his scooter probably wouldent have made it down any of the neighborhood streets
I'm beginning to see that part of being a Schenectadian is the propensity to trash the city you live in rather than leave. I guess self-deprecation is also "so Schenectady".
You mention leaving. Wonder how many homeowners would do just that if they could be fortunate enough to sell their home at the assessed rate. Perhaps some org. (Hmm, wonder who?) could take a survey about that. Just so we have a balanced view thats inclusive of the homeowners looking to leave. The results of such could prove an interesting read. We never object to the publics/"official " view as long as ALL sides/opinions/info. are represented. Then all can come up with their own fair assessment of a given situation.
Don't feel sorry for the city folk! We have talked to MANY MANY MANY....and they don't have a clue. They bit@h bit@h bit@h bit@h about the taxes, school, police and crime...blah blah blah...... BUT YET....they love downtown and frequent all of the eateries, watering holes, proctors and theater....and parade. They DO NOT have a clue who is tax exempt and who isn't. They think Galesi is the best thing since sliced bread. BUT YET.....they bit@h about their taxes!!!! GO FIGURE!
THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GET!!!
