So I'm a year and a half removed from having cable or watching broadcast tv, and during that time I've had to look for alternatives. I bought a "smart" tv and subscribed to NetFlix. In addition, I found a wealth of very good viewing on Youtube, alot of archived tv shows as well as tons of music. This winter I added Roku to the mix and discovered even more alternatives, like Livestream:http://new.livestream.com/ where you can view all kinds of live events for free. Watched a Papa Roach live show last night. You can catch Jazz from Lincoln Center, acoustic music from Nashville, classical etc.
Music City Roots from Nashville http://musiccityroots.com/ streams every Wednesday evening. It's a 3 hour live show, for acoustic music lovers.
You can watch these from your computer also. I really can't watch this kind of stuff on mine anymore. My eyes are getting bad LOL.
Just thought I'd pass this stuff along.

Our family has recently "Cut the Cable" but we still like some broadcast stuff as well, so I put up a antenna and am pulling in 20+ channels. The local channels broadcast alternate channels which provide some great content. WMHT TV 17-1 2 and 3 are the most watched channels in our home. The over the air comes in clear and most in 1080 HD. Rotterdam being a stones throw from the escarpment where all the locals broadcast from means any decent antenna will do. The following is what I ordered its small but powerful and at $45 from Amazon its economical too. http://www.rcaaudiovideo.com/antennas/?sku=ANT751R
We have had Netflix for a few years now that stream through a smart tv, an xbox360 and Google Chromecast device. I have several friends on Hulu Plus who love it, and have considered it myself. YouTube is my go to for instructional videos and fail videos (love to watch people fall). Its amazing what you can fix after watching someone else do it. My Keurig owes its life to a YouTube video and a $3 part from Florida.

Depending on your TV you may have an input on the back that looks like the following, if so a simple cable from your computer to this port allows the computer content to be viewed on the larger screen. Add in a wireless mouse and keyboard and its is your new extra large computer monitor for posting on the Rotterdamny.info site.
There are also VGA to HMDI cables available if you don't have that port on your TV.
One of the nice benefits from alternative viewing is the total lack of commercials in most cases. No Fucillo, no political ads, no anti-smoking ads. Heck there's one thread on these boards that talks about a Mohawk Honda commercial, and to be honest I've never seen it LOL. I had no idea what it was about. Oh, and my cable bill is less than $45/mo.

we have been looking into alternative. we found that by the time we paid for Netflix, hulu, roku AND TW for internet.....it was about the same (IF NOT MORE) that we are paying now for cable and internet now. the only benefit....is calling TW and saying BYE-BYE!!! we're still checking tho.

Wow. I just have Netflix as my only pay subsciption, so with my broadband internet, I'm paying around $51/mo. I'm grandfathered in with Netflix at $8/mo for the next 2 years, then it'll go up a buck. The initial investment for the Roku stick for my smart tv was around $50, I only use the free roku channels. I never really watched alot of tv anyway, so the way I'm set up now works well for me. I also have the antenna option for the broadcast tv, but I rarely use that.
