Dairy Queen Grill and Chill wants to be in Colonie
Jan 15, 2015, 2:56pm EST

Michael DeMasi  Reporter-Albany Business Review

The former Lake Electronics would be demolished to clear the site for a Dairy Queen Grill and Chill under a proposal that will be reviewed by the planning commission in the village of Colonie, New York.
Joe Clark, who owns the property at 1650-1652 Central Ave. and nearby industrial parks, is seeking permission to demolish the former TV repair shop and replace it with a 2,610-square-foot restaurant with 40 seats and a drive-through.
The site includes a small house that would be demolished at 1 Jupiter Lane.
The commission will consider the request Jan. 20, said Pat Hurley, village clerk.
Lake Electronics closed in March 2013 after more than 60 years in business.
The closest Dairy Queen Grill and Chill to Albany is in the Columbia County town of Ghent. The company also runs an Orange Julius Just Juice at Crossgates Mall.
Dairy Queen is owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway.
The chain wants to expand its presence in the Albany area, said Steven Lerner, a broker at Vanguard-Fine LLC who handled the Central Avenue lease.
"These guys are coming in strong," Lerner said. "They're looking at the entire Capital Region."
DeMasi covers real estate, construction, retail and hospitality.

Ooh ooh.   you are gleefully happy.  More ice cream for you.

And what have you got to say about your beloved mayor and plex and the massive give-aways of the city homeowners money to GE??.   Your lack of addressing that FAILED metroplex project paid for with taxpayer money is very much noticed.

They are looking at other sites in the area.  So there is an opportunity/possibility to get them to build one in Rotterdam.  There is that unused pad near Office Max on Campbell Avenue that would make a great location or  across from the I-88 exit on Duanesburg Road.

Dairy Queen was in Rotterdam Square years ago and closed.  Why would they be interested in returning to that area now?  Has business in the mall area increased?

That might be a possibility.

Not easy access from both directions and limited area for drive thru.
DQ's I'm familiar with are usually a bit larger, also.

Dairy Queen pulled out pf New York - except for a few mall locations - a number of years ago.  They have returned and are now building free-standing (not in malls) facilities.  There is a load of traffic that drives PAST the mall or IN THE VICINITY OF THE MALL.  The mall just has to bring in tenants that will draw the traffic INTO the mall.  Most people don't choose to go into a mall solely on the basis of what fast food restaurants are in the food court.  They go because of the major tenants.  As for Dairy Queen, they are looking to build free-standing restaurants - that is NOT in a mall.  That is why I recommended sites that are NOT in the mall.

Now, if we could only lure a Bass Pro Shop and/or a Cabella's, a What-a-Burger and a Waffle House to Rotterdam.

I'm all for a Cabelas... slightly less for a What-a-burger...but could care less about the Waffle House.. I've been to a bunch from Delaware on south and they are WAY overrated... You get a better breakfast at Denny's..and cheaper too.

I prefer the Waffel House. They always have FRESHpie and cakes.
EIGHT different ways to get the hash browns
They always say high when you walk in
The waffels are pretty good
For 10 bucks you cqn get a rib eye steak dinner

now Dennys isnt bad either.
next time your in Dennys- notice how high the tables are relative to your seat. Interesting ergonomics.

I'm only in Denny's for breakfast...
I'm not a huge waffle guy, so maybe that's why waffle House does nothing for me... Pancakes, french toast, and eggs+bacon are more my speed.

ANY 'serious' business will locate to areas where the residents have disposable cash.
ROTTENdam is clearly not one of those areas.
But hey....at least it will bring 'minimum wage' jobs to the area!
And the government will get even MORE taxes!
