Here's my point - look at Niskayuna. They have their own fiscal management problems, but most of the people who live there don't work there. It is possible to maintain a decent community to live in without GE, in fact I would guess that most of those who work at GE now don't live in Schenectady. But are elected officials keep getting away with the tired "no money because GE" excuse, despite the fact that they also keep getting away with claiming they created thousands of new jobs. There is no reason for us to be living this way, none whatsoever. No valid reason, I should say. You see some places in the Western part of New York, they had maybe one employer, that left. There's nothing there. Not so in the capital region, we are a major metropolitan area in a high-wealth state. |
