North Oaks tells Google Maps: Keep out - we mean it

By LORA PABST, STAR TRIBUNE
June 02, 2008 - 2:33 PM

The St. Paul suburb with private roads may be the first U.S. city to ask that street images be removed.

You can look at almost anything on Google. Just don't try to sneak a peek of the homes in the private community of North Oaks.

The city of 4,500 residents has demanded that Google Maps remove images of North Oaks homes from the website's Street View feature, where any Internet user can glimpse a home from the nearest road.

North Oaks' unique situation, in which the roads are privately owned by the residents and the city enforces a trespassing ordinance, may have made it the first city in the country to request that the online search engine remove images from Google Maps.

"It's not the hoity-toity folks trying to figure out how to keep the world away," said Mayor Thomas Watson. "They really didn't have any authorization to go on private property."

Since the introduction of Google Maps' Street View last spring, the feature has caused controversy in several cities and with the federal government. The Pentagon banned Google Maps from taking any images of military facilities, and a Pittsburgh couple sued the company over images of their home taken from the private road in front of their house.

How the GOP views taking control of the senate:
"It's not so much about what could be passed but setting the agenda
and debate for the next presidential race."

Pretty spot on for both parties...
The pubs will not have the 60 votes to cut off debate on bills... and certainly not enough for overcome a certain presidential veto...

In the statists mind.  The marketplace would never build roads, bridges, airports, sewers, or anything else to make sure the maximum amount of people have access to their goods and services.  Only the benevolent government is capable of doing that. The market could never figure out how to do it.

The market has figured out how to do it... it just costs more.  Look at private prisons for example.
Many cost more and provide less services for the same or less tax dollars.
Either way... Public or private... YOUR TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR IT.

Since most of our infrastructure has been built with tax dollars... whether or not the private sector CAN do it
is irrelevant.  The Public Sector DID DO IT.

If you hate taxes…

Yup! Crime = Jobs.  Government or private.  Make more laws, it's good for the Corrections Officers Union AND Corporate Profits!

Since most of our infrastructure has been built with tax dollars... whether or not the private sector CAN do it
is irrelevant.  The Public Sector DID DO IT.
Irrelevant?  It's a monopoly.   Congratulations Public Sector!  You succeeded by forcing people to give you the money!

If you hate taxes…
So, you’re a Republican that hates taxes? Well, since you do not like taxes or government, please kindly do the following.
I'm not a republican - I'm a political atheist.

and box, please do not cross any privately owned bridges.  Yes, they exist, as a matter of fact, it was pretty common 100 years ago.  How did they manage it without government control!!! Mind boggling!!!

Quoted Text
Rare bridges to the past There are just 16 privately owned toll bridges left in the nation. N.J. and Pa. have three of them.

Not all bridge tolls are created equal.

As most motorists surely know, the dollars and cents they pay in tolls usually end up in the coffers of the states or a state agency, such as the Delaware River Port Authority.

But federal highway statistics show that scattered around the country are 16 bridges with private owners who are empowered to collect tolls. Three are in New Jersey, and two of them are at the Shore.

For decades, the Beesleys Point Bridge across Great Egg Harbor Bay and the Margate Bridge have carried countless vacationers and an ever-increasing number of year-round residents on their trips to and around the Shore.

They are still active pieces of the early road network that opened the South Jersey coast to the motoring public, eventually supplanting the railroads that created the resorts. And along with the Dingmans Ferry Bridge on the upper Delaware River, they are reminders of an even earlier era when private tollhouses dotted the state.

Built in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the two Shore bridges share similarities - both are only two lanes and are made of steel, concrete and wood - but their differences are pronounced enough that one now makes money and the other doesn't.

The Margate Bridge - a two-mile combination of three small fixed spans, a drawbridge, and a causeway - is the moneymaker, although its history has been shaped by money troubles.

The Hansen and Capaldi families have owned it since 1964, when they and a family no longer in the picture bought the seashore-mainland connector at a bankruptcy auction.

The bridge wasn't bankrupt, but its owner - the Hill Dredging Co. - was, so the bridge was sold off to cover the firm's debts.

Even earlier, when the bridge opened in 1932 as part of a plan to develop Margate, it carried cars for only a couple of months before it closed - or, rather, its drawbridge was kept open - for seven years.

"I guess there weren't enough cars to pay for the bridge," said Roger Hansen, chairman of Ole Hansen & Sons Inc., the bridge's parent company.
