A licensed/insured/bonded contractor would have left no issue or doubt who is responsible and who pays!
Removes much of the stress a homeowner needs to go through if not covered.

Thank you!  A licence is a state service.  Anybody can ask the same requirements of a contractor to work on their property as a state licensed contractor.  A license is meaningless except to those that don't want to do their own due diligence.

You disagree that a person or business can write a contract outlining all these things that a license does?

As a matter of fact, the contractors I've hired actually give US the contract for our review, and our legal department reads it and amends it if necessary.  Then both agree upon the terms.

Apples and bananas..."your legal department"?????? Now you want to give it a different twist than you
as an individual doing something, and if this make believe business that you work for
has a legal dept and they hire non-licensed people, then they should be fired for failing to do what they are hired to
do...protect the company!

I had hired someone, based on references, to remove an in-ground pool. They weren't licsenced, but I figured what could really go wrong. Well their backho jumped out of gear and went right through my garage. They threw up some would to cover the paint, but the whole garage shifted and now the door doesn't close all the way. They got scared, I guess, cause I never saw them again. They were suppose to take out the pump, level the yard, seed. They just dumped some dirt into a hole, took off, and disconnected their phone.

Licensure wouldn't have kept the backhoe from slipping out of gear, but it would have helped protect both me and the contractor from the mess that resulted.

The license wouldn't have made one bit of difference.....AT ALL.
All you needed was a  contract  you both agreed on and signed....and the contractor needed to supply his CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE coverage.

THAT IS ALL YOU NEED!!

People have driver's LICENSES....and are horrible drivers....but they have INSURANCE to cover theirS and their victims a$$.

I have seen several licensed contractors that have done really bad work and had to be taken to court.

Licensed contractors charge 2 to 3 times what others will charge.

Plus, licensed contractors have better lawyers when you take them to court.

So you post that you would like to know what I do for a living, and when I respond to you in that context, you accuse me of a twist.  You're unbelievable.

All that is required is proof of insurance for any work not requiring a building permit.  If you require a licensed plumber for switching out a urinal in a bathroom - you are probably overpaying, and I'd fire the bastards for being so stupid.  License means nothing.  It's only useful to comply with other stupid regulations.  Like a building permit.

And insurance doesn't cover those who are not licensed. A license shows that there is at least a minimal level of competency. An insurance company is not going to take the risk to cover people when their is no evidence to demonstrate any training in the field they are working in.

NOT TRUE! A business can CERTAINLY get insurance coverage WITHOUT a license. And it REALLY has nothing to do with competency.
There are 'good' and 'bad' in both those with or without licenses. It is the insurance that matters.

Ask for a CERTIFICATE OF INSURANCE 'FIRST' to check the coverage....then you're good to go.

I KNOW.....we do this everyday!

An "individual" cannot get insurance to cover them when doing "electrical" work; or "contracting" work; or
anything similar. The insurance is specific to the need for people getting insurance to cover their
work related activity. Don't think there is an insurance company around that would issue a "blanket"
policy to cover any/all types of work without seeking proof of qualification to perform the tasks
intended.  I do not believe a license is guarantee of work quality or competence, but at least it's
better than hiring the guy on the corner.

Allowing work by a non licensed contractor can also void your own home owners policy. Instillation of appliances by unlicensed contractors also typically voids warranties.
