If the city had good leaders, tonight would have been "Tuesday in the Park." Swimming, rides, picnics, games--like they had softball games between city political leaders vs Albany political leaders, or fire dept vs police dept, etc. Many food booths, etc. the playgrounds for the children. Many picnic benches, BBQ grills, etc. Trees to give you shade. The cooling soothing effect of grass, trees, flowers, and lakes (as oppose to hard and hot concrete, hard and hot asphalt, and no water.
And all the fireworks shows downtown combined do not equal what Tuesday in the Park had.
It was also National Night Out
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Yes, nice grass/trees enviroment sure beats beach sand on blacktop and a "concrete/blacktop lawn".
Overtime on soft lawn vs overtime on asphalt is no difference. But I seem to remember that they used lots of neighborhood watch volunteers too which the "parties" on hot asphalt don't use.
But then do the downtown millionaires pay some special fee to cover the cost of police, but then, if they pay such a fee, their money came from the taxpayers' pockets anyway.

Mike - they did use Neighborhood Watch - their assistance was invaluable.
Still, they used a lot more officers at CP. In 2001 they started using a lot more officers. The reason for the switch was deterrence. The rationale for that was if you pt 12 officers up there they could respond to a problem. But, if someone goes to the event sees a commotion, then sees officers dragging someone out - that is still a negative because it is not the kind of thing you want to see when you bring your family out for an event. Blanketing the park with dozens of officers was designed to create a deterrent effect, so that, you didn't have to look very hard to see a police officer, which in turn, would hopefully deter people up there from creating a problem. Downtown - the way it is configured it is a lot easier to control.
A lot of people do not realize how many people used to attend Tuesday in the Park. I think the crowds may have been 4-5 times as big.

I seem to remember quite a bit of discontent from the community about that issue. As the the popularity of the event grew, concerns over crowds and hooliganism also grew from the surrounding neighborhoods.

obviously CRIME is still a major issue in Schenectady, NY. Was talking to some folks (nice folks) that moved up here from NYC....they are going back to NYC. They said that there is more crime in Schenectady than where they came from.

or the large number of police could give the impresion to outsiders that there is a crime problem so they dont come. Can you name an incident where there was a major crime at one of these events in the park outside the basketball courts?
