I think it is absolutely appropriate for the police to be doing such gigs.
Private security does not have the same effect as an armed police officer.
In fact - with the appropriate insurance, I think the city should generate revenue this way by marking up the services.
But - should not impact pension in any way as it is private duty.
Maybe you are right but who sets the rates? Are the rates the same for all "customers" Who does the billing? What happens if they don't pay.
The fact is that most businesses wont "hire" the cops becuase they dont anticipate the need and/or think that it should be included for their tax dollars.

The benefit from some of these private details is that the City does not have to pay the salary and fringe for the OT. The Stockadeathon, Crhistmas parade, Summer Block Party are examples, as well the St. Anthony's Festa and similar events. When the City held Tuesday in The park, I think the City had to pay all the OT for that event.

Do organized public gatherings(like St Anthoney's Festa) require police security in order to obtain the permit?

I seem to remember in the news. Just the police who marched in the Christmas parade the mere half hour, automatically got paid four hours overtime, i.e., time and half meant they got paid six hours worth of time for a mere half hour (if that much) that it took to walk a few blocks

Cicero - They have to apply for a permit and if the crowd is large enough they are required to have some type of crowd control/security arrangement - but it does not have to be provided by SPD. I noticed the soccer leagues in Central Park used private companies.
Marching = Honor Guard, that typically is not paid gig. The officers who worked the parade are required to be there before the parade starts and have to stay on duty a while until after it is over.
The 4 hour mandatory recall is a part of their contract. It has been the subject of negotiations on several occasions but other issues took priority. Typically, it is only relevant to court appearances. A lot of that has been reduced by switching the detectives to a M-F schedule and coordinating things better with DA's office. Most agencies have mandatory 3 hour. Some have it adjusted based on your schedule. For example, if you work at 4 pm and you have a court appearance at 2pm - you can only get 2 hour minimum recall.
Wow if the citizens only knew the power of these Unions....how little they pay for benefits like healthcare.....how easily they rack up hours....how hard it is to fire someone....how horrible pensions are (as an investment) no private company's use them anymore.... there is a saying..."Pigs get fat hogs get slaughtered". The "system" will eventually implode. The market going up right now is the only thing keeping these unfunded retirements floating.

No kidding, I worked one hour overtime at my job and they acted like I bankrupted the place because they had to pay me time and a half for that 1 hour I guess all places are different

A significant percentage of officers working now are under the new pension tiers.
I appreciate that, however the new pension tiers are still very lavish when compared to the private sector. If I am wrong, perhaps you can outline the details new pension tiers so that it can be more easily swallowed. I have no problem being wrong.

EXACTLY. If the public knew the pay and benefits these cops receive. All they ever hear about is the 10 ten salarys. It isnt the top salarys that hurt us the most it is the benefits and lavish retirement packages.
