A few years ago, the DEM mayor of Schenectady stated that "he lowered home values by 4%."
That statement was made when the STATE set the equalization rate at 104%
Say during the last reassessment just four years ago your house was assessed for $114,000. Then the STATE set the equalization rate at 104%, then that means the MARKET value of your house fell to just about $109,650.
Then when the ignoramus know-nothing DEM party mayor in the city made that statement claiming he "lowered home values by 4%," he basically was implying that he "reassessed the city." But because the intelligent people that used to live in the city largely have left, the majority of the rest that remained fell for the mayor's LIES. You see, the mayor NEVER lowered anything!!!!!!!!!!! If your house was assessed in the last citywide reassessment at $114,000, then AFTER the DUMB DEM mayor made that statement, then your house was STILL assessed at $114,000 and you were paying taxes based on an ASSessment value of $114,00.
There are some people (who post on these boards) who still live in the city and have the intelligence to know the mayor is just giving a line of crap, and these people know that they are paying taxes on a higher amount and probably some have taken steps to grieve their assessment.
Now that I have proven how ignorant the DEM mayor is, who trusts him to appoint someone to the assessor position who has absolutely not one teeny weeny shred of background in appraisals, valuing property, real estate, taxes, etc.
Yesterday there's a story in the news that talks about the mayor choosing someone who will learn the assessor's job "on the job." Oh it is so funny, it says she "recently toured and measured a fire house." WTF??????? What a total WASTE of taxpayer money touring an exempt piece of property.
It further says she visits houses with data collectors. She is learning from "everyone in the office."
A person who is appointed to serve THE TAXPAYERS should NOT be learning from the mayor's handpicked nitwits.
I guess when the STATE sets equalization rate next year at something like 135% mayor and this UNCERTIFIED political appointee will make a joint announcement saying "We have lowered home values by 35%." And sadly the people in the city will a** U ME that their assessment has gone down and they won't even notice on the tax bill how the taxes are calculated by the ASSessed value instead of the market value. And of course by that time, their home value will really be 50% lower rather than 35% because the equalization rate is not exact, it's an estimate.
The story goes on to say that she will be buying a house here because you can get a great house for a "great value." That statement alone proves she is NOT qualified to be an assessor. A house is NEVER a "great value" when it falls in value by 23% (based on the equalization rate) in just four years -- especially at a time when there is no more "real estate crisis" and at a time when home value outside of the city of Schenectady are increasing.
God help the city when finishes her few months of learning "on the job."
Better pass the word, better put your house up for sale now because it'll be worse when she's working with only the supervision of the mayor.
