When GE first began moving employees from Schenectady to Atlanta in 1998, they were in the global parts, services and sales portion of the business, and the company said that it needed the direct air service that the airport, a major hub for Delta Air Lines, could provide. Lured by state tax incentives, the company moved about 450 jobs to suburban Cobb County.
The second shoe dropped in December 2000, when John Rice, the newly named president and CEO of GE Power Systems, announced its intention to move the Power Systems headquarters from Schenectady to Atlanta. While the move involved only 40 to 50 jobs, it nevertheless was viewed as a setback for Schenectady.
....... The Power and Water business will be led by GE Senior Vice President and Power and Water CEO Steve Bolze, and will have 41,000 employees and sales of $28 billion this year, the company said. It provides power generation equipment and water processing technologies. GE Oil and Gas, with 33,000 employees and $15 billion in projected revenues this year, provides equipment and services for the oil and gas industry, including drilling and pipeline equipment, and is headquartered in Florence Italy. GE Energy Management, provides technology to deliver, manage, convert and optimize electric power for customers. Based in Atlanta, it has 27,000 employees and projected sales of $7 billion this year."
With all the $5 million grant from Metroplex for the battery plant, another $15 million from NYS for the same plant, with Metroplex secretive PILOT agreement with GE.... and 33,000 are in Italy and 27,000 are in Atlanta.
Stop giving GE NYS money. Want Metroplex and grant money? Have the bulk of your employees here, not elsewhere. .....
I think the main reason for negativity is that folks are paying the highest taxes in the state (and getting poorer and with no increase in services) while the rich developers/politicians are getting richer. I don't really believe it would be any different if the opposing political party was 'in charge'. imho
As far as a casino (i'm not really in support of), bars and eateries.....what else is there? Again...the industrial age is OVER!!
the point is that ALL of these new developments came with promises of more 'high paying' jobs and lower taxes. that hasn't happened. in fact..taxes/fees have only increased. so what makes anyone think that a casino is going to lower taxes and improve the culture in Schenectady? if history repeats itself....it won't.
it will just be another example of how the rich developers aka the friends and family club will continue to get richer.
this will NOT benefit the struggling homeowner, the substandard school system, the plummeting home values or the decrease in crime.
there are still closed bridges and roads in need of repair and TWO Hamilton hills now!

Another big waste of time. Here is where the casino is going to East Greenbush. It's funny to see local Revs, bozos and so-called business leaders support a casino which is the last thing Schenectady needs with it's record foreclosures, retail free/food desert Downtown and national leading teenage pregnancy rates. No one want retail or a condo at ALCO so throw out a casino proposal. Next more bread and circuses!

Ha ha ha! Funny that the newest defector to E. Greenbush casino deal is the Metroplex golden child..Mallozzi. He wants to open a steak house there.
What? Galesi didn't want his steak house in his casino? Hum, for the millions Metroplex has handed over to these boys you'd think they could play nicely. Apparently not...

The only steak that people in the city of Schenectady can afford is tube steak. Thus it would not be financial sense to open a steak house in the city.
But then we have to remember too that Mallozzi doesn't live in the city either

Concerned East Greenbush residents obtains FOIL material for proposed casino Posted: Jun 18, 2014 11:25 AM EDT Updated: Jun 18, 2014 03:26 PM By Amy Cutler - email
EAST GREENBUSH, N.Y. - Some East Greenbush residents who have been concerned about the possible Thompson Hill casino say they filed a FOIL request to learn more about the proposal.
A resolution was passed by the town board earlier this month in support of the $300 million resort and casino. However, residents of the have been divided on the proposal, including Don Johnson, a member of the newly formed Save East Greenbush group.
"Behind the scenes there were notes in some of the FOIL material, that we don't want to have more than one public meeting, if we have to have that because we don't want to make the same mistake they made down at Exit 23 with too many meetings with community input," said Johnson.
Johnson believes there was something more behind the town board's support of the proposal than meets the eye, so he filed a freedom of information request. He asked for, and later obtained, 22 pages of notes from six different meetings that involved building a casino.
The notes reveal that the developers met with town board members and that they discussed the best ways to promote the plan, including a public relations campaign, how best to respond to critics and more.
"The process appeared to me, looks like it was rigged. It looked like a political railroad job,” said Johnson.
Saratoga Casino and Raceway denied any impropriety.
The documents also showed that the developer wanted only one public meeting, stating that anymore and it would promote the negative side.
“No intention at all was there of any influence forced upon the board members at all,” said Town Supervisor Keith Langley.
Langley explained what was behind the meetings.
"We met with the casino owner, operator and he wanted an opportunity to meet with the board members and I provided that opportunity, it was just an informal session where the board members had the chance to meet with him and question him,” he said.
The plan became public in April when developers announced their interest in building the casino on Thompson Hill Road. Developers expected the business to bring 1,700 construction jobs and another 1,700 jobs once the casino opens.
Earlier this week, it was announced that the eight-story hotel and casino would be named Capital View Casino & Resort if East Greenbush won the bid for a Las Vegas-style casino license in New York.
On Wednesday morning, Saratoga Casino and Raceway and Churchill Downs Inc., announced Mazzone Hospitality would run the steakhouse at the casino and destination resort.
Final proposals for casinos are due on June 30. The State Gaming Commission, the group tasked with selecting where casinos will go, said it won’t consider a casino license application without the resolution.
There are 18 groups vying for four licenses that will be granted in the Capital Region, Finger Lakes Region and the Catskills.

Wow, great idea, and at least the casino where they would be would be paying property taxes.
Since this is Galesi property and the current city leadership forces the taxpayers in the city and county to pay the property taxes for it, then the taxpayes have a birthright entitlement to know each and every detail about the proposal for Schdy.
Of course the city/co/plex will NEVER divulge anything to the taxpayers.
Heck, the city and county refused to hold any public meeting at which the public could ask questions about this project and the use of their tax dollars.
Just hope and pray some other community gets it.

It is newsworthy because unlike the other communities chasing after the casino placement Schenectady is united in its support for it. This is a great opportunity to create jobs, draw tourist dollars -- which will increase tax revenue. And as for the nayboobs attacks on SCCC, it is a very good educational institution and one of the City-Counto of Schenectady's greatest assets. Unlike the nayboobs, SCCC actually adds value to our community and its quality of life.
How about this posting in the news...I looks like the "united support" in Schenectady County is AGAINST the proposed casino
Schenectady County voters largely opposed new casinos when asked last fall Sunday, June 8, 2014 By Thomas Hodgkins/For The Sunday Gazette Text Size: A | A Advertisement
In November of 2013, the Board of Elections posed a ballot question to New York voters about allowing new casinos in the state, a question that ‘deeply troubled’ the New York Public Interest Research Group because of its ‘trespass into advocacy.’
The distortionary question had the desired effect, and now the people of Schenectady are in a position of potentially having a casino sited in their community when they clearly voted against it.
Using voting data from all 120 election districts and the six municipalities in Schenectady County, we can discern the sentiment of the people. For complete election results in the county see: schenectadyplaygrounds.blogspot.com.
In the town of Niskayuna, every single one of its 20 election districts — the majority of which are as equidistant from ALCO as city election districts — voted against increasing the regressivity of tax collections by building a casino.
The no vote overwhelmed the pro-gamblers by a margin of 25.7 percent.
The good people in the town of Princetown had the highest turnout in all of Schenectady County at 56.7 percent. Residents in both of their election districts voted against allowing more casinos. The margin of decisiveness was 14.1 percent, while the percent undecided or the undervote was 6.8 percent.
The strict definition of an undervote is when a voter did not mark a choice about either a candidate or a proposition. In this case, it can happen when voters do not turn over their ballots. Researchers have also explained that it arises from multiple reasons, from being undecided about an issue, the lack of quality education, the method of voting and the wording of referenda questions.
Forty-seven percent of Duanesburg’s 4,328 voters came out to vote in November. All five of the community's election districts voted against the casino, and 54.4 percent of the people in Duanesburg voted against casinos. The margin of decisiveness was 13.3 percent, while the undervote was only 4.5 percent.
If you love the city so much, why do you REFUSE to buy a house IN the city and pay the super high taxes and live among the ghost town houses, the blight, and the shootings?????
Huh Oh, no answer
If you love it so much why to you ABSSOLUTELY REFUSE to set foot in the city? No answer of course. Claims to love the city oh so much but won't dare come anywhere near the city to live in it.
By your ABSOLTE TOTAL REFUSAL to even put your pinky toe in the city to rent, you have proven beyond all shadow of all doubt that you acknowledge the city is is a terrible place to live, that people simply cannot afford to live IN the city, you have proven you want nothing whatsoever to do with living among in the ghost down, in the midst of all the empty houses, the abandoned houses, the boarded up houses, the smelly trash not put into bags, the blight throughout the neighborhoods, the stabbings, shootings, drugs, dogs, and punk kids that have infected every neighborhood in the city.
You are full of BS 1,000 times more than the ex BS mayor.
DV, we know you are all full of BS, but this below is a photo of the city you claim is so strong, so wonderful, but you REFUSE to enter the city, you do not want ANYTHING to do with living among the trash that the city has become.
Your dems take from the taxpayers and give the money to their millionaire cronies instead of using the taxpayer money to enforce the rules of the city regarding trashs.
And you claim the city will get so much tax revenue from a casino. But you REFUSE to respond and state how the will collect property tax revenue from a property which is 100% tax exempt til the end of time !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
