Schenectady County Community College board will vote to support Mohawk River casino
Megan Rogers Reporter- Albany Business Review
Schenectady County Community College board of trustees will vote tonight to support the $450 million Rivers Casino and Resort at Mohawk Harbor, about a mile from its campus. The Schenectady, New York casino project would provide an "invaluable and close-at-hand" resource to students in the two-year school's casino gaming management, culinary, tourism and hospitality programs, according to the resolution. The college started offering its casino gaming management program last fall because of the projected growth of the state's gaming industry. Trustees and administrators are considering expanding the program to include tracks in information technology and security. The Mohawk Harbor casino project was approved by the Schenectady City Council June 10.

Yes DV. More "good news" for the any entity that is tax exempt. More good news for the billionaire Galesi and his tax exempt property.
For the city, more BAD NEWS -- homeowners having their taxes increased to pay the property taxes on an increased assessed value. More people fleeing the city, more drop in home values, more drop in home sales, more reduction of police in the neighborhoods where the taxpayers live because they mat have to devote time to the casino. More reduction of essential services to the taxpayers in the neighborhoods in order to pay for services on the tax exempt Galesis land.
IF you EVER come in to the city, DV, you surely have seen the blight spreading like wildfire. Watch complete neighborhoods turn into ghost towns.
So, tell us DV, what have the homeowners and taxpayers in the nerighborhoods gotten in return for all the tax exemptions given out to the downtown rich? Huh? AS USUAL TOO CHICKEN TO ANSWER THAT, RIGHT???????
You are great at finding things to copy and paste, how about copying and pasting something that supports your claim that county taxes are lower than 50 years ago???? Well?????? Are you EVER in the rest of your man-boy lifetime going to post the evidence that supports what you say??????
Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Why is this surprising or newsworthy? The SCCC Board of Trustees is comprised, to a large degree, of political appointees. Several (Gary Hughes & Ray Gillen) have already expressed their support for the casino.
It is newsworthy because unlike the other communities chasing after the casino placement Schenectady is united in its support for it. This is a great opportunity to create jobs, draw tourist dollars -- which will increase tax revenue. And as for the nayboobs attacks on SCCC, it is a very good educational institution and one of the City-Counto of Schenectady's greatest assets. Unlike the nayboobs, SCCC actually adds value to our community and its quality of life.

"SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – General Electric out of Schenectady has announced Wednesday they are laying off around 200 employees as a way to reduce costs.
The company says this is part of their plan to restructure the company's manufacturing operations. The layoffs come after GE was contracted one of the largest deals the plant has had; a $2.7 million deal to produce power plant turbines and generators for Algeria
The layoffs are expected to happen between now and the end of the year.
GE spokesman Shaun Wiggins tells NEWS10 ABC, "In order to retain our competitiveness in this challenging, dynamic industry, we're looking at ways to reduce cost across the global Power & Water business. There will be some reductions in jobs between now and the end of the year, but it will be minimized and targeted, impacting less than 2% of our total workforce globally."
Wiggins says they have already identified who will be laid off and notices have started going out.
The 200 workers who will lose their jobs will not be any of the hourly production employees. They will be the salaried, non-union workers who do a wide range of jobs, he says.
Wiggins says that the employees impacted by these cuts will be helped by the company, to look for other positions within GE. However, those who choose to leave the company will be given severance and outplacement assistance.
The Schenectady plant, which holds the company's renewable energy headquarters, employs 4,000 people. It also holds a GE steam turbine, a generator plant, a wind farm monitoring center and a battery factory.
Over the next two years, the plant is expected to build most of the power plant turbines and generators for the Algerian government, which is part of a $2.7 billion order which GE recently announced. This is one of the single largest orders the Schenectady plant has ever had.
Mayor Gary McCarthy says its only a minor setback, pointing out that GE created 450 jobs in Schenectady at a battery factory two years ago.
"The GE campus right now is the largest industrial campus in the state of New York. You've seen facilities in Rochester, Syracuse, Buffalo, those have all closed down. GE has reduced its workforce here, but has been reinvesting not only in the main place but their R & D plant in Niskayuna," he said.
In September, about 200 GE workers from the Fort Edward plant, who are represented by a union, found out the plant will be relocating to Florida. "
Those of us who love our community are focusing on what is STRONG about our community. Focusing on working together to BUILD UP our community. Focusing on improving our community. The RENAISSANCE of the City-County of Schenectady continues --- the BEST IS YET TO COME!

If there is any tax revenue increase it will do the property owner no good unless this revenue stream results in lowering prop. taxes. Earmarking it specifically for that purpose. In all likelihood it will go to offset pension/health ins. expenses(the largest expenditure for govts.) for employees, and no doubt there will be more new hires. If this is the best we can do,casinos for revenue,we are in really bad shape-dependant upon a persons addictive behavior.
The renewable jobs (battery plant) are still in Schenectady.
I know people who lost their jobs in the Schenectady job loss action - they also were NOT part of the battery plant.
I realize that doesn't moot your point, but wanted it clear that that battery plant still does have manufacturing jobs there from what I know.
Guess my point is that the 350 'expected' jobs at the battery plant is somewhat overshadowed by the 200 jobs lost in Schenectady and the additional closing of the Fort Edward Plant (another 200 jobs).
Nothing gained and the SCCC program will not have the job secured positions at GE as former employees are scrambling for openings.
