The Democratic Senate Campaign Committee is accusing Republican Senate candidate George Amedore of exploiting a loophole in state ethics law to avoid filing a financial disclosure statement for 2012, his last year in the Assembly. What the political haymaker doesn’t mention is that it’s a loophole used by most — if not all — departing lawmakers from both parties. In short, the state Legislative Ethics Commission says Amedore did nothing wrong and, to the extent that it is a gap in reporting, no less than others in his situation. Amedore spokesman Kris Thomson called it “yet another desperate attack with absolutely zero substance.” In a Wednesday letter to Amedore, the Democratic chairs of Greene, Montgomery and Schenectady counties call on him to voluntarily disclose his financial interests for that year — even though he was not required to do so under the current interpretation of state law. As justification, the Democrats are seizing on an interview in which the Rotterdam Republican recently told WRGB that elected officials should be “held to the highest standard.” http://blog.timesunion.com/capitol/archives/213089/dscc-hits-amedore-on-loophole-used-by-everyone/ |
