Really? Between mail order, kindle readers, and the this new thing called the internet - they should be downsizing, not growing.
I personally would rather buy an e-book, or have one delivered to my door via Amazon or B&N, than go down there and deal with rude people, bums and beggars at the door, guys urinating on the building, dealing with parking - and meters - etc.
Why anyone would use the "service" of this multi million dollar establishment, I dont know.
We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works.
I NEVER go to a library. however, I do know some folks who REALLY don't have a computer...and do use the library. Not many tho.

Exactly .. it should be downsized proportionately.

agree.....the day of the bricks and mortar libraries are becoming a thing of the past.

While we must certainly look at ways to save money, public libraries are an essential institution in a democracy that must be maintained.

Yep, a true socialist Government books.
But why do you bother to say "we" ??? You don't pay county taxes, your name is NOT ON ANY TAX BILL!!!
Galesi should be forced to pay for the library -- do you think so DV???????

The physical libraries should be maintained; they offer a lot more than just a book. There are programs for kids, research assistance, etc. but there isn't the reason for there to be as many of them. The Niskayuna branch is less than 10 minutes from the downtown branch and is not a "neighborhood" branch---on a busy road, not walkable to by the majority of Nisky residents. Other than the desire to remain disconnected from us low-lifes in Schenectady, there is no reason to keep that branch open. Close a couple within Schenectady too; choose one or two, in addition to the central library, that are located in areas that help to provide needed community resources and close the rest.
We live in a world of cars and computers---there is just not the need for so many branches anymore.
The number of branches is certainly an issue. There would be good arguments on both sides -- close the branches or keep them all open. The Main Branch is easily accessible by bus or car and, IMHO, should be the focus of our scarce resources. Another issue are the library hours - certainly we can't afford too many hours but on the other hand the library's hours are just as bad a bank hours -- that is open when people are busy at work or school and closed when people have free time to go to them.

"we" can't afford it.
You can, because your name is NOT on a tax bill that pays for the library!
But the bankers' hours issue has a point, but then, banks do not need to be open in the evening hours because people do banking electronically/oneline. Ditto books. Should the library be so massive to serve perhaps only 25% of the people it used to serve simply because most people use other than paper books? We who are taxpayers cannot necessarily afford it.

While we are on the subject of the library, I will add that the new addition to the main branch looks great. I am sure glad to see that the money that I pay in property taxes is going for a good cause.

You pay property taxes????
Show us your name on the tax roll.
BIG teller of BIG FAIRY tales
Telling FAIRY tales just like your FAIRY tale that the city of Schenectady taxes are lower today than before the dems took over 10 years ago. Just like your FAIRY tale claiming than the county taxes are lower than 50 years ago.
And as we all know, you will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER provide one teeny weeny shred of proof that you pay property taxes or that the taxes in the city and county were lower than in the past as you have claimed.
Do FAIRIES really get orgasms telling lies?
