Hogging the credit that's due taxpayers
Marv Cermak, Covering Schenectady
Published 7:57 pm, Monday, April 7, 2014

The Times Union

As of late, the Schenectady red carpet has been rolled out more and more to welcome job creation — in some cases alleged — and new economic development.

Announcement of 100 or often fewer promised new jobs these days receives more staged publicity than years-ago coverage of the local General Electric plant pink-slipping 1,000 at a clip.

Politicians, their high-paid appointees, administration stooges, developers and others on the gravy train have taken all the credit for any improvement of Old Dorp, aka the dimly lighted Electric City.

Well, the major visible development has been pretty much limited to the Proctors block. It's taken a dozen or so years to turn that short stretch around.

During that period, city neighborhoods have failed dramatically.

On a scale of 1 to 10, the residential area failure is about a 14.

While "Happy Days Are Here Again" is the theme song of the self-aggrandizing power brokers, the real credit should go to the taxpayers. They are underwriting the cost of the slow-freight moving downtown transformation.

Some may recall, the decayed Proctors block improvement project started with total underground replacement of sewer, water, power and telephone lines. These costly upgrades coupled with a new streetscape took three construction seasons.

It's no secret Metroplex has been pouring millions in grants, loans and whatever to resuscitate the central business district. And the state, county and city have also contributed more millions to the same cause.

Metroplex is funded by sales tax revenues. The state, county and city financial lifeline is generated by income, property and various other forms of taxation.

So I guess what I'm driving at is that the true unsung heroes in the downtown rejuvenation story are the taxpayers themselves, not the political types who spend the tax dollars and take all the bows.

Regarding this matter Nice to see the TRUTH in print once in a while, or maybe for the FIRST time, ever.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

He's stated the truth so well.  It should have been a front page headline.

McC is probably looking to sue him now.

What Marv failed to state, and he should have a Part 2, is to explain that the residents of the city have got NOTHING in return fo9r their "investment."  NOTHING in return for the money that the DEMS have STOELEN from the residents under threats of "you pay for downtown or you lose your house!"

Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent.
Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and
speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.

Exactly.  The bank excrows are the most transparent when you see the Taxes and FEES up 50 to 75% in 5 to 6 years.  The gig is almost up though.  They can only squeeze so much blood from a stone.  Everyone talking about raising Income for the government and no one addressing the Govt Employee Compensation, Insurance and Retirement costs that are the true burden.  All this unemployment and we allow people to work on top of a $90,000 plus pension.....say there is noone else out there that can do the job.......Niskayuna almost closing down Birchwood for a $400,000 shortfall then we pay out a lump sum severance packade close to $150,000 plus benefits to a superintendant who was basically bribed out of the job.  Cant even patch the largest and deepest potholes in the most travelled roads.  Pure Incompetence.

The last election, Hull spoke favorably of Plex.  He doesn't see the crime of stealing money from future generations to give it to millionaires today.

This city needs a mayor who cares about the taxpayer and the neighborhoods by lowering taxes and attracting tax paying businesses.
