You have to thank the incompetent, failed leadership of Republicans - Farley on the County Legislature and Jurzynski as Mayor for driving the City-County of Schenectady into the ground and causing taxes to rise in the late 1990's and early 2000's. Now under competent, effective Democratic leadership things have turned around and the City-County is headed in the right direction. Obviously, there is more work to be done but the worst is behind us.

2000-2013 my taxes have more than DOUBLED!! under the incompetent democrats im afraid the worst is ahead of us...
and actually i live in a very bright and shiny world, but i'm not afraid to open my eyes to see reality... FAILURE /DOUBLED TAXES....

I have to tell you we have some friends who used to live on one of the streets off Eastern Ave, and they ask something because it once was a nice area there. There two burned out houses from different fires that occurred several years apart, in the mid 2000,. Tell us WHICH MAYOR and WHICH party ignored these burned out houses all these years, thus causing homes in that area to drop in value even more??????

It is quite obvious that the worst is yet to some. What with the mayor and the DEM party taking out a massive LOAN to give money out to multibillionaire Galesi and making the financially struggling homeowners to pay for it.
What happens the next time the city does a reassessment? When you see that the tax bill on a $100,000 house is $6,000 and then when a citywide reassessment reduces all the houses in half, which will cause the tax RATE to double, which means that a house with a market value of $50,000 will have a tax BILL of $6,000.
Falling tax base and increasing taxes is proof positive of the most incompetent, most ineffective mayor and council in the history of the city. And remember, the EVIDENCRE has been provided of both. Where is your EVIDENCE, DV????????

Yep, they're certainly turning it around. Just check the level of assessment, what is it, 123% ? If that stands as the equalization rate, I'll have lost shy of 20k value on my house. Strictly by the numbers only. Actual sales result may or may not vary somewhat. Grievance day can't get here soon enough.

Under the Republican leadership of Farley, Farley and Jurzynski, there was NO economic development, no chance of improvement - downtown was a ghost town, no attempt was being made to address the problems. In the past 10 years, we have seen positive economic development projects and other infrastructure improvements. There is a lot of work to be done - but at least the City-County is moving forward. There was an excellent letter to the editor in yesterday's paper highlighting the abysmal failure of State Senator Hugh Farley to do ANYTHING for Schenectady. He has triple-dipped on the public payroll for 40 years, handed out patronage jobs to his family and taken luxury vacations to Hawaii & DisneyWorld with taxpayer dollars ($80,000 for 2 trips alone) all the while doing absolutely NOTHING for us.

It's true - Stratton was the reason for the turnaround in Schenectady.

Stratton turned this city around and laid the groundwork for a lot of the redevelopment in this city. I can't even imagine what the city would be without Stratton's guidance.

Metroplex / IDA's were all bastardized when this PILOT initiative was used. With all the secretive PILOTS with little to no accountability (if a company doesn't pay their PILOT to the Plex, what are the consequences??? Hum, ask the original owner of the Vandyke who left with $350K + of Plex funds).
The Plex took millions of taxpayer money to build every façade downtown and continues to spend hundreds of thousands every year for upkeep. Center City, Marcellas, Villa Italia, Bombers, Paul Mitchell, Clintons Ditch, Van Dyke....all government funded for-profit businesses. Each one has funneled taxpayers money and continues to receive property and school tax exemptions.
It's decimating the City taxbase as the middle class are paying for businesses which should be paying their fair share. It's criminal, it's economically unsound and with the sales tax going down in the County...these businesses aren't pulling their weight....again.
