Aint no big deal. Water is CHEAP here in Rotterdam - and they've offered leaf/brush pickup for years, free. It's about time we pay for the service we use!
Free? Where did the money paying the salaries and trucks come from if nobody in Rotterdam was paying for this "free" service? I'd love to hear how people get paid for a service that there was no money to support it.
Get rid of the "service". I support it. I always thought my taxes paid for the leaf service. Now that I know it those guys were working for free, that explains the Rotterdam cop grossing $200K last year. He must have been getting their money, while they worked for free Eliminate Robert Denny's position, and you pay for your leaf "service".
FWIW, Joe Villano posted on Facebook that all town residents will be receiving a mailer very soon explaining how to opt out of the brush pickup and avoid the fee. Are you ready? You'll be required to fill out a form requesting the opt out, have it notarized and then submit it to the town. You will be required to do this yearly.

Joe Villano In the near future the town will be sending you an informational packet and an opt out form. In order to avoid paying the fee every year you will be required to fill the form out, get it notarized, and submit it back to the town before a deadline. My opposition contends that the notarization of the form on an annual basis is absolutely imperative. They supposedly believe that there will be rampant fraud of neighbors opting out other neighbors who want to pay the tax and get the service. I can't imagine the people of my town effectively filling out forms and submitting them to the town similar to a spiteful crank call. Ha ha neighbor you don't get brush pick up. I think that it should be abundantly clear to the taxpayers in this town, that the annual opt out coupled with the notarization requirement, is merely a way to inconvenience the residents of this town and create an opportunity for people to get stuck in the program who intended to opt out either because they're too busy or forget to submit the form back in a notarized state before the pressing deadline.
Why yearly, so if you forget to file the form the town can bill you. Fill out the form once and if you want to change your mind at a later date fill out another form.

Pretty simple to figure out isn't it. By the way the folks in the Rotterdam Facebook Group have been tossing around some pretty interesting ideas re: the opt out. Some bordering on anarchy.

I'd like to see how many town employees will opt out of leaf service, yet still get their leaves picked up on the dime of those that opt to pay for the service. That is the Rotterdam way. Just like the residents whose driveways and business parking lots are plowed out by town plows.
Wait till Senior Citizens start hearing about this "opt out" program and having to get it notarized yearly.
Yep, it'll go over like lead balloons.
We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics. Funny how that works.

Seniors will get a deep discount or exemption from the opt out...It's a vote getter...How do you court the senior vote? Tell them they are getting a service for free that everybody else will pay for.

Really? Do you know this for a fact, or is it just more of the same type of speculation that goes on here on a regular basis? If you do have some "inside" information please enlighten us with the "facts".
On an unrelated note, I was highly amused to learn this morning, that 1 Cicero = 4.51166667mm. And so I would ask, is that number in your case, referring to the size of your cranium and the gray matter contained therein, or the length of your male reproductive organ, if you are indeed a male.

Nahhh, no "inside' info. Just a little intuitive understanding of how politics works.
I don't see a politician standing up in front of the senior on a fixed income and telling them - "the leaf pick up service you've had for all these years was really free, and now we are going to charge you $50...If you don't want to pay the $50, then you can opt out of the service and get rid of your leaves yourself granny."
Yes...It should be interesting...If a politician doesn't make this an issue to, and run on a senior citizen deduction or exemption on leaf service, they don't know how to win elections.
I can make the campaign lawn sign slogan right now...DON'T LEAVE(get it "leaf") OUR SENIORS BEHIND
