Troubled Schenectady cop John Lewis terminated

Mayor Stratton announces Lewis' termination MondayMayor Stratton announces Lewis' termination Monday

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Troubled Schenectady Police Officer John Lewis has been terminated from the force following a history of problems with the law.

After a 2 year investigation and 85 page report, Mayor Brian Stratton and public safety leaders announced Monday afternoon that Officer Lewis is no longer with the department.

"In reality, by his own actions, Mr. Lewis is exactly the opposite of what the people of Schenectady expect and deserve in their police officers," Mayor Stratton said Monday.

Lewis had been arrested 6 times in last 2 years, and has faced numerous charges. He was acquitted twice, but Schenectady Police Chief Mark Chaires characterized Lewis' employment as a mistake from day one.

"John Lewis' career is over, fortunately," Chaires said Monday, calling the firing a "business decision".

He went even further in his criticism, referring to Lewis as "an absolute, horrible waste of taxpayer money."

Most recently, Lewis is facing criminal mischief and reckless endangerment charges after police say he broke a window in his Schoharie County Jail cell earlier this month.

Lewis remains in the Schoharie jail, following a DWI charge.

Back in February, Lewis was acquitted of dunk driving charges following a December 2008 arrest. The ruling was made after the presiding judge found there was simply not enough evidence to convict him on three of the four charges brought against him.

Lewis was again accused of drunk driving in January 2010. He was charged with DWI in Schenectady after allegedly hitting a parked car outside the Ellis Hospital emergency room. Lewis was also charged with aggravated unlicensed operation and leaving the scene of an accident.

In a December 2009 incident in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Lewis sustained what appeared to be a knife wound to the chest. Lewis told police it was an accident. He was treated and released from a local hospital. No charges were filed.

In November 2008, Lewis was arrested for allegedly stalking and threatening to kill his estranged wife. Earlier that year, he was also accused of pushing his wife during an argument over custody of their son.

The process to terminate Lewis had been frustrating, particularly a court order that Lewis' review be done independently and not by the city's public safety commissioner, Wayne Bennett.

"We have no choice," Bennett said. "It's the only process we're permitted to use at this point."

The city is appealing that court order for the future, but says no matter the procedure, this is the right outcome for Lewis.

4 other Schenectady police officers have undergone disciplinary hearings similar to Lewis. A 5th officer's hearing should be completed next week, and a 6th officer's is pending.

Leaders are confident their decision will not be overturned and Lewis will not be reinstated like he was back in 1998, when he was originally fired for allegedly using a racial slur while on the job.

That firing was eventually overturned and Lewis allowed to rejoin the force.

sanfordy - yes very sad, leaves behind a little boy approximately 5 or 6 years old.  addiction is an equal opportunity destroyer - doesn't care about race, economic status, education...

It was rather obvious that the man was on this trajectory, he probably had as much or more access to whatever kind of 'help' is offered as anyone, but no one could stop it. It makes you think, but I don't come up with any answers.

or the x-chief aka 'the snow man'?
or curits the xcop?
....or any other criminal?

everyone should have some kind of honor and dignity after death.....

he is in a better place and that's where his recovery will come from.....not a hero...but as a human being that had demons beyond his control...nor did he want to control them...

it's an addicts choice and no others.......and only he is accountable for what he did in life....in death...it's final and that's when as a human being

he was out of control and nothing or no one could stop it......frequently, relapse...sobriety . relapse  is all a part of one's life..

Rest in Peace....for where he is is where he will find it...

an addict is not a criminal....

everyone is an 'addict' to something....some things kill, some things bust apart families, some things cause distress, some
things cause financial ruin, and some things cause death just like drug addictions.....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

Damn, you people are brutal.  Someone's brother, son, father, boyfriend, lover just died.  Have you no morals and common decency to not gossip about him or his family?

We are advised NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics, but we are encouraged to judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics.   Funny how that works.
