Christine- when a store goes under- it's not a republican or democrat issue. It's a not enough foot traffic issue.

I visited back here in 2004 after being away for 22 years (mainly for military reasons- no comments please) and let me tell you what a surprise I found. Mohawk Mall becoming "Mohawk Commons", very dirty public restrooms in the Rotterdam Mall, Shoporama totally changed, Mohonasen school district a shell of it's former self (although I was here in August and was given a tour of the High School and it is a better institution).

Main reason- lack of JOBS. Mainly due to GE moving most of it's operation overseas. Now I could easily blame REPUBLICAN "leadership" at GE caring only for the so-called bottom line. What's the profit in that?

Your anger perplexes me Christine.

Not enough foot traffic? There is plenty of 'foot traffic' over there, believe me.
This area is actually less hard hit as far as unemployment than many others. Like Detroit. They lost jobs, but they still HAVE many more jobs (there is still an automobile industry in Detroit, remember?). It is very much a political/government issue. Let's see, mocking women, wonder who that is?

I guess if you lived in Schenectady, you would understand that anytime a new business is opened with Metroplex subsidies, the Democrats in power ALWAYS take credit for it, and they credit public policy for the new business. Now, if a political party readily takes credit for the success for economic development, they should also readily take the blame for businesses closing their doors.  But that is not the case.  Suddenly bad economic news and businesses closing down has nothing to do with the policies they created.

Now, do you believe that one factor looked at when a business chooses to do business in certain communities, it is based on the government policies that effect their businesses bottom line - like taxes & regulations?

GE moving is always the politicians scapegoat, and they act as if their policies had no influence on GE's decision to move out.

I agree that when a store goes under, it's because of not enough foot traffic. I guess that when a store opens for business that is subsidized by Metroplex and given tax exemptions by the county, then it's because of increased foot traffic?  Please..

Metroplex supported businesses don't go out of business because of lack of foot traffic, only because they have the benefit of tax exemptions and low interest loans that their competitors do not enjoy.  The party in power gets to pick the winners and losers, and it just so happens that the businesses that receive these benefits are party loyalists.

Winners and losers, that is what it amounts to. They can't make money for connected cronies off of existing businesses, so to hell with them, even if they go under and don't pay taxes any longer they will just raise taxes on everybody else.

I'm not a republican.  Don't misread my post for an endorsement for Republicans. The republicans created Metroplex.  I have whittle use for any government agency or political parties.

It is NOT a Republican vs. Democrat issue.  Businesses fold for many reasons.  One of the most significant reasons is how well they are run and serve their customers.  The Hallmark store in Rotterdam Square Mall and the one up in Glenville on Route 50 have a great selection.  The one in Hannaford Plaza USED TO but it was really hit or miss the past few years.
Once again, the nayboobs are trying AND FAILING to make a political issue out of what really amounts to the INTERNAL ISSUES of a particular business that failed.

hit or miss????  You obviously didn't shop there. Product variety, service were always consistent and top shelf.

...Rotterdam is a great place to own a business....

Closing may have been pretty sudden, indicating something else was going on.
Heard on another forum that employees were not told in advance

Its same owner as the stuyvesant store. He didnt even tell the employees he was closing.

Success has many fathers, failure is an orphan. Did someone not just explain how this works, in Schenectady County? Sure, businesses close for all sorts of reasons, but if a business OPENS it is a sigh of the exalted greatness of the politicians/elected officials. Right.
The decline of the area is a major factor in the loss of business, and the decline of this area is due to our elected officials. How much "foot traffic" do you see in Saratoga County? How many of the people who live there, work there? Yet I see businesses opening over there, CONSTANTLY. It is not what they DO have, it is what they DON"T have that we do.
It is too bad that another business that caters to the middle class is leaving the county.

Sorry Dave, but my name is Mike!   Why do you again insist on  saying Christine instead of Mike or Christine.

and as far as stuff around here, it's DEMS rule.

If you had a brain you'd know that most of the long time TAXAPAYING businesses in downtown especially are closing while the DEMS and their plex are giving away all the taxpayers' money to their rich political cronies.  Not too mention how the DEMS and plex are STEALING from the financially struggling homeowners in the city by making them pay their own property taxrs AND the taxes of the millionaires and billionaires downtown.

Can't imagine why someone who allegedly is in Omaha and thus does know any facts about the theft from the taxpayers to give to the rich, the lack of seeing the DFRASTIC REDUCTION in the city's tax base, the falling home sales and home sale prices  (while outside of Schenectady home sales AND home sale prices are increasing), and then the increase in tax foreclosures resulting in an increase in vacant residential properties, not to even an increase in vacant residential apartments, and yet the DEMS are using taxpayer money to build more apartments.

And this is supposed to be conditions that taxpayers should not be angry about?   If people should not be angry, should they be happy about their homes losing value, taxes going higher, etc?

And none of your business whether it was Mike or Christine, whether it was Mr or Mrs who made the first post, but the first post was NOT a message of anger, but rather one that merely stated a FACT.

JCPenney's closed there Latham store - yet Colonie is hardly declining.  They did so because the company as a whole has INTERNAL ISSUES and external (market related) isssues and the company is restructuring/regrouping.

Similarly, there are a number of vacant commercial structures in Saratoga from businesses that failed.   Those failed due to internal issues and external (market related) issues.

The simple fact is that the Hallmark store in Hannaford Plaza was dealing with a number of internal issues and external (market related) issues   ---- the greeting card business in general is in decline --- the location didn't keep pace by stocking the variety that it once did -- etc., etc.    NONE of these issues could be solved by local politicians nor should they be,  So the premise made by the jack a** who started the topic is completely incorrect.

You could very well be correct about the "internal & external" issues the Hallmark store may be having.  But lets not forget, Marcella's and Villa Italia THREATENED to leave Schenectady County, and only decided to stay when they were very well subsidized through Metroplex and the County.  Now, was Villa Italia or Marcella's experiencing "internal & external"(market related) issues when they were contemplating moving to Saratoga County to do business?  Was the reason they wanted to flee Schenectady County is because "foot traffic" was low?  Or was the business climate in Schenectady so bad(taxes & regulations), that leaving would have been better for their bottom line?  Or was it pure extortion of the taxpayer money out of absolute greed?

Maybe the Italian pastry business and home appliance business is on the decline...And maybe, just maybe, the local politicians threw Mallozzi and Marella a life line in the tune of hundreds of thousands in property tax exemptions and grants, and low interest loans backed by the taxpayer to keep them solvent.

It's very easy to make such blatant statements when you don't have to prove them....because you can't.
You have no insider information that the store had "internal issues", you are simply making an unfounded accusation...
very unprofessional and irresponsible remark from someone on the town Planning Committee.

For those interested in understanding what Hallmark is doing, here's good article.  Explains the decline and the future paths
that Hallmark is following....far from the doom and gloom some would paint!
