Is anyone else hearing of people receiving collection notices for REALLY OLD traffic tickets, from the county or the city? Through a collection agency that just got a huge pile of them? So old that you can't dispute them and go to court? |

If you paid them, then why worry? Seems to me the only folks who should be concerned are those who haven't paid. And if they haven't paid them by now, then my guess is they don't care anyway, and in that case should be prepared to face the consequences. Wasn't there just a recent story about scofflaws and accompanying outrage by the citizenry? And now that they're trying to collect from the scofflaws there's outrage over that? I guess I don't get it. |

What is the statute of limitations on a fine, isn't it 2 years? |

Prevent what? People get a ticket, ignore it and then complain that city tries to collect it later? |

I would assume it would be up to the city to enforce it within a reasonable time frame, they could have moved forward to the DMV and suspend the persons license until the fine was paid or issue a warrant. But now since its going through a collection agency I'm just guessing they're just trying to get what they can get and hope people would bite. |

Also many people can't afford to pay such high fines and the court will usually ask how long they need, if their financial situation doesn't get better it would make no sense to hurt them even more by eliminating their transportation especially if there was no victim to the charges. |

If the city spent resources going after tickets, it would be unbelievable task...and people would complain that resources should be spent going after real crime....read some of the threads on this forum that are just that! Hiring agency to collect is least cost...usually agency does work as percentage of collection and no additional fee, so that means no additional cost to the city other than percent of fine collected. City does nothing, then people complain that City is doing nothing....catch 22, what some on this forum love to attack! Let's be real here...majority of people that get parking tickets KNOW they are doing something wrong and take a chance they won't get a ticket. Exception are those that meters run out and they don't get back there in time. So with all that said, similar to "can't do the time; don't do the crime".
Also many people can't afford to pay such high fines and the court will usually ask how long they need, if their financial situation doesn't get better it would make no sense to hurt them even more by eliminating their transportation especially if there was no victim to the charges.
Like you said...if people would try to take care of ticket when they are supposed to, courts might consider terms or in some cases lower fines. But instead, choose to not go, again hoping it never comes back to bite you in the butt....then complain when a long time goes by and city sends collection and fine is now double or more... |

THANK YOU HENRY......CIRCUMSTANCES THAT ARE OUT OF CONTROL MAY HAVE PREVENTED THE PAYING OF FINES.....and besides.....some of the fines
were paid and someone made an error and sent the total amount to the collection agency..and never let anyone borrow your vehicle....that's what has
caused this event......
but no one will admit it........so have some compassion for those who are living without finances or retirement that keeps them debt free.
On this blog/thread....doesn't seem to be much sensitivity towards fellow man.....
Smile and say something nice for a change....

Resources should be going towards real crime not victimless crimes, but the police here spend their resources on going after the victimless crimes because that collects revenue. They put our officers on the side of the roads for 8 hour shifts doing nothing but looking for simple violations, I would bet the majority would rather have them out investigating crimes with victims like theft or worse. This is the reason many don't call the police today because they know there will be no follow up or real investigation done. |

No argument with your point! That's why I say hiring collection agency is most cost effective. |

I agree, if I got a fine today I would be screwed because I wouldn't have the means to pay it. I could try to fight it but that would be also come at a loss of time and money I couldn't afford. My last ticket was 4 years ago for a expired inspection sticker, it was one week over and I simply forgot, instead of issuing a warning he issued a ticket, sensitivity towards our fellow man can go a long way outside this blog as well, just don't expect it when money is on the line. |

That doesn't change the problem if the police resources are still used just to find the victimless crimes. Our city is looking for money not the criminals and that is where our money is being used for today. |
