The irony of this whole thread is...In modern American politics, the two religious figures that ran for President was the Reverand Al Sharpton and the Reverand Jesse Jackson - DEMOCRATS.

The irony is that you forgot the other two religeous figures that ran were Pat Robertson  and Mike Huckabee who were republican.

YUP!

It's Cicero's selective memory.  He only remembers what fits his agenda!

Why is it important you didn't start the thread?
You're the one that posted 2 Dem presidential hopefuls
and conveniently left off the REP hopefuls.
Selective information to guide it Cissy's way?????
Then a redirect denial!!!
Typical Cissy games!

No Joey, I was just pointing out that a democrat starts a thread, when reverends from his own party ran for president.  Hence the irony.  You never hear box or any democrat slander the reverend Al or reverend Jackson or run them out of their party for the religious beliefs.

No games, just pointing out the hypocrisy.

A Democrat started the thread?
Yes and what is the title of the thread???
IS AMERICA A CHRISTIAN NATION?
It's a question Cicero!
Your 'imagined indignation' at someone asking a question is comical!
I've never supported Sharpton or Jackson... but, of course,  you already knew that.

I much more closely support the Founding Fathers on this issue:
Quoted Text
“The rights [to religious freedom] are of the natural rights of mankind, and
… if any act shall be … passed to repeal [an act granting those rights] or to narrow
its operation, such act will be an infringement of natural right.”
– Thomas Jefferson, Statute for Religious Freedom, 1779. Papers, 2:546

OR

Quoted Text
“Among the most inestimable of our blessings is that … of liberty to worship
our Creator in the way we think most agreeable to His will; a liberty deemed in other
countries incompatible with good government and yet proved by our experience to be
its best support.”
– Thomas Jefferson, Reply to Baptist Address, 1807

OR

Quoted Text
“The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious
to others. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods, or no god.
It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.”
– Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, 1781-82

I'm a firm believer in "Freedom Of Religion
and
Freedom FROM Religion

We are not a Christian nation, our founders feared Theocracy for good reason, it doesn't mean we didn't use Christian values to help our country because we certainly did and it wasn't a bad thing.

Which "Christian Values" did we use?
An Eye For An Eye?
or
Forgive Thy Neighbor?

Or was it these Religious "Values"?
Islam
~ A person cannot be a complete believer unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.
~ One should not harm himself or others.
~  Muslims recognize that all wealth is a blessing from God, and certain responsibilities are
required in return.  In Islam, it is the duty of the wealthy to help the poor and needy.

Or these Religious "Values"?
Judaism
~ Judaism teaches us to treat ourselves and others with respect; even the stranger is to be
treated with respect.
~ The Torah tells us that we are all created in the image of God. This is a simple and profound
idea that should guide our interactions with all
people. We do not know the “image of God” except as it is reflected in the different types of people
we encounter in the world. If we can remember that each of us, no matter how different, is created
in God’s image, this idea can lead us to find the connection we have with one another and help
create truly inclusive communities.
~ The Jewish principle that “All Israel is responsible for one
another” (Shavuot 39a) means that it is our responsibility to stand up for each other, especially for
those who are vulnerable and cannot speak up for themselves.
~ We must love and accept our whole selves, and in doing so create the capacity for extending
that love and acceptance to others.

Or was it these Religious Values?
Buddhists
~ Buddhists value compassion for all beings and causing no harm to anyone
~ Don't kill Don't steal Don't engage in illicit sex
~ Don't speak divisively Don't speak abusively, Don't tell lies

Or these Non-Religious Values?
Atheism
~ Freedom of conscience, religion and belief are private and unlimited.
~ Freedom to practice religion should be limited only by the need to respect
the rights and freedoms of others.
~ All people should be free to participate equally in the democratic process.
~ Freedom of expression should be limited only by the need to respect the rights
and freedoms of others.

Some Right Wingers take any 'good' or 'positive' value to be "Christian Values" even
though their religion is often ambiguous on these issues.

The how, what and/or where regarding America being a Christian nation from day #1 doesn't matter. It's a non-issue.

America is NOT a Christian nation by any stretch of the imagination.

ALL religions can barely hold themselves together let alone a country.

America is a secular country ruled by the law of men with a small thread of ALL religions running thru it.

Again..........a moot point!

It'snot a 'moot point' to the Rabid Right.

It's not a right or left issue. It's has nothing to do with politics.
The church lost it's way decades ago.
Again.........the church became the harlot who sold herself.

America is NOT a Christian nation and hasn't been for decades upon decades!
Yes it is a moot point.

The USA was NEVER a Christian Nation.  You won't get a disagreement on that issue from
the Left, but the Rabid Right will attack that position as if it were in the Constitution.
This IS a Left or Right issue!
