Optimists close their eyes and pretend problems are non existent. Better to have open eyes, see the truths, acknowledge the negatives, and speak up for the people rather than the politicos and their rich cronies.
Whatever happens best be done EXCLUSIVELY at the expense of owner. NO TAX MONEY, NOT ONE DIME!
Better to have an empty mall property than to have our home values drop and have empty houses as people leave like what happened in the city of Schenectady. The city and plex should NEVER have given handouts from the taxpayers to billionaires. What would have been better? Empty buildings downtown with a high tax base and lower property taxes? Or lavish palaces downtown causing a falling tax base with ever increasing taxes resulting in the wild uncontrolled spreading of empty houses in the neighborhoods? Naturally the leaders opted for the second option.

After reading the editorial in the Daily Gazette (Jan. 14) about local leaders being proactive to save Rotterdam Square Mall, I started to shake my head and say, “Here we go again.” Having the assessed value cut from $30 million to $19.9 million a couple of years ago was bad enough. But in reality, the property sold for $8.5 million in January of 2014. So, there is no doubt what’s coming as far as a true assessment, and a blind man could see the writing on the wall. With Macy’s and just recently The Gap announcing a departure, it’s basically over. Take a look at the Amsterdam mall (failure) and what the former Clifton Country and Mohawk malls did to reinvent themselves to compete in the marketplace. As we all know, Stuyvesant Plaza is an anomaly not easily re-created. VOICE OF EXPERIENCE Having been in the retail business for 24 years (1981-2005) operating multiple video stores in the local area, I can tell you from experience there will not be a rush of independent retailers looking to fill the vacant spaces at the mall, no matter how good a deal they offer on the rent. As a result of being in the sports novelty business for the past seven years, I personally know independent retailers that have stores there, in Colonie Center, and throughout the Southern Tier of New York and into Massachusetts. There are also three other independents of the same store genre, one in Crossgates Mall and the others in Wilton Mall and Aviation Mall in Glens Falls. They are all sports-theme stores selling novelties, collectibles and clothing. The one sports store that was a longtime tenant in the Rotterdam mall r e l o c a t e d to Clifton Park. These are all well-stocked specialty stores that appeal to a wide audience. However, how many stores of that unique nature do you think there are out there? And now, with what seems like a mass exodus of stores, there is really no draw to go to the mall in Rotterdam. FEW ATTRACTIONS Other than a Sears or Kmart national ad, there would be absolutely no advertising drawing customers to Rotterdam Square Mall. I don’t know how the movie theaters fare at the mall, but that’s not an area I would like to be getting out from a movie at night. This past November (Gazette, Nov. 21, 2014), National Grid was about to cut the power on the mall on Black Friday. Not that this is just another sign of the inevitable, but one more incident in a series of conditions that add up to its eventual demise. I am not sure about the town leaders coming up with solutions for the space because generally they are not business people that derive their income from retail sales. However, being concerned about saving the tax base is a real problem and not one that is easily solved. Trying to get a grocery store to invest in a location there is a great thought, but Kmart and BJ’s, not far from the mall, already sell a lot of the staples that people use on a daily basis. POSSIBLE ANSWER Perhaps something along the lines of the Healthy Living Market in Wilton Mall might be something different enough to draw people to the location. But again, would consumers travel there specifically for that if they’re not already in the area? This is not going to be a quick fix or a simple solution. Perhaps a conversation with Billy Fuccillo might be in order. But something needs to be set in motion now before the lights really go out. Uh, you are aware that with the combining of the Carmen and Rotterdam LL's (due to lack of participation by the youth of the town), there is no longer a need for new fields. You did know that,right? You do realize that happened last year, and that the whole LL field discussion has been rendered moot? I'm sure you're aware of that right?

re: baseball fields.....didn't 'we the taxpayers' via the county leg. pay larned for that land? wasn't the land bought and paid for 'specifically' for the baseball fields? Or did the sale fall thru?

you are so orientated towards what you say is right....move??????...you are the one to move if you don't live in the town, city or county.
you are always raving about too much taxes ...etc.,...and most often have negativity in how you reply to one's statement...you have no compromise in
your thoughts...your way or no way.....well moving doesn't always solve anything.....this Town needs cooperation, compromise.....and diversity..

I don't know the details of all that, but I do know that after the 2013 season the two leagues combined, thus making the need for new fields unnecessary.
And the reason the leagues gave for consolidation was not enough kids were interested in playing baseball to have the 2 separate leagues.

I don't believe your last statement......many can't afford the high fee to sign up...have helped a few in the past to do that....
Larned is a crook and joins the rest of them....so a lot of the agenda is passed and the money goes here and there...but not to the original direction...
everyone benefits but the kids and the taxpayers......
you know....that old saying....these people like to fix what is not broken.....and screw things up royally....and probably illegally....who is to know..
my thoughts are the kids that can't afford it....and, there are always enough kids to play little league....always....it's just not promoted any more
