On upper Union Street they have some of that perpendicular parking, which is a holdover from when there was less traffic and fewer cars in general, and you see a lot of it in areas with wider streets so you have room to maneuver without backing up directly into the traffic lane. Erie Boulevard had that kind of parking. It looks to me like the work on Erie Boulevard is making those spaces tighter, to look 'fancier', while simultaneously narrowing the road through use of islands. Now, I would have thought that no, "they" know what they are doing, they would not be building a problem from scratch, having cars back out blindly into a busy traffic lane, or not being able to back out at all when traffic gets heavy. But then I remember driving across the Western Gateway bridge and seeing what looked like a wall going up, and thinking, "I wonder what that is for? It must only be some new kind of temporary construction barrier." So I know longer trust that "they" are looking out for our interests, or that they wouldn't be going ahead and building a hazard from scratch.

It's hard to tell what the hell they're doing, they started tearing up State St right past Erie Blvd as well, blocking off traffic heading towards Scotia, now you have to cut around that area and drive down the warzone which is Erie Blvd.

Anyone who drives to Scotia regularly knows of the incredibly stupid design whereby cars passing the college attempt to merge onto 890 and some jackasss stops at the end of the acceleration ramp, causing cars to pile into his asss.

Now as cars approach the end of Erie Blvd where they normally speed up to merge onto 890, they have built a U-turn lane where during heavy traffic cars will back up into the Erie Blvd lane and will cause many accidents each day, similar to the ramp coming from the college.

The entire Erie Blvd corridor is a debacle. Cars entering the city from Freeman's Bridge Rd come down Erie only to find there are no routes into the city, just to 890. Sure, you can cut through Jay St, and fight your way through the downtown one way mess if you have a half hour to spare sitting at red lights. You can't take a left onto State, unless you own a cop car. You must travel down to Ferry St and pull a U-turn to get to State St. This will work well when traffic is heavy. To get to Wendy's, the bank, Lyles, the motorsports store or the locksmith you must travel to the edge of the crosstown and pull a U-turn.

Luckily Holmes and Kugler keeps a tow truck at the Sunoco station most of the time. They are gonna need it.

But they are "experts..."

So long as it looks new and fancy. BTW, the traffic signals on Erie Boulevard are especially bad, but ALL the signals in the city need adjustment and repairs. Why are the stoplights at city hall not flashing lights at eleven at night? I don't believe the lights on Erie are timed correctly. These are some of the most important, and most basic functions of local government.

Actually, the Erie Boulevard project is proceeding quite well and should be completed ON SCHEDULE in about a month or so.  The new work being done on Lower State Street is in anticipation of a to be announced major new project, and that work is being done quickly, too.
It doesn't take a half hour to get through Downtown Schenectady - unless one is completely clueless.  West bound Erie Boulevard traffic can make left turns onto Union Street and Liberty Street.  One doesn't need to go all the way down, make a u-turn and come back.  Never had to do that.

Traveling up Union or Liberty Streets, those routes are not designed in any way to accommodate people heading to the South side.

A simple route with 10 traffic lights from the Broadway exit of 90- to the post office requires using Smith St crossing State,
Sitting at the light by city hall for 2 minutes, turning left onto Franklin, then right at Jay St, then another light at Liberty St.
Then around the block and 8 lights back to Broadway and 890.

And the traffic from GE is going to decrease as well....so this un needed project will be a waste.
GE just let go some of their white collar folks and are not working on the blue collar folks.
There is only 1200 folks there now.....it will be even less next year.

Folks that we've talked to say that they avoid 'downtown' Schenectady at all costs.
Even folks from scotia/glenville won't venture into the dark hole.

And for the record............it does take a 1/2 hour to get thru downtown Schenectady!!!

And you sit at those lights just as long at night, well after any shows have let out. The point of the thread, my point anyway, is that while the road is torn up anyway, is the last chance to correct any mistakes, but it does not appear that that will happen, we are going to build in defects, brand-spankin' new. Just like that half-a** bridge. Does anyone remember how we had a brand new jail built because the old one was too small, and the new one wasn't any bigger? Or how the old DSS building had inadequate parking, and the new one has inadequate parking AND a defective parking lot AND the building literally falling apart?
The other streets downtown, how many times has someone unqualified made a decision to change the traffic patterns, parking, or street width? You have to question everything these people come up with, because history has taught us that we can't assume that "they" know better than us, or that "they"are even paying attention to their jobs.

Kinda' pathetic in a City $5 million in debt, a $19 million dollar Erie project is moving forward. A street with little to no retail, a TON of empty buildings (Olender, Grossmans, old KEM cleaners blg, Trustco blg) and with little hope of new businesses coming in, how can NYS ALLOW this to happen.

My reading comprehension is quite strong.  Maybe you should read the post from the nayboob who claimed it took 30 minutes to drive through downtown and that he/she had to drive all the way down Erie Blvd and make a u-turn in order to get where he/she was going.  You nayboobs must have all graduated from Mr. Magoo's Driving School.
