There's a story in the Gazette about one woman's experience with Mont Pleasant Middle School, and her decision to remove her daughter from the public schools. I don't have it in a format where I can post a link here. It's sad, that decision about Oneida School was made for bogus reasons, against the wishes of the parents, who on earth wants to send their child into proximity with the uncivilized offspring of violent criminals? What adult would put up with are workplace where your co-workers could threaten you, physically attack you, destroy the facilities you use such as bathrooms, harass you, steal your belongings, become so disruptive you could not get your work done, etc? Yet we expect people to send CHILDREN into that? Because the violent children are way more worthy of consideration by the schools than your own kids. Notice there is no money to keep these "unsound" buildings open, but there is money to rent the extra buildings needed or to add on to the existing buildings. BTW, not many people remember this, but way back when Schenectady High started getting the predictable poor results, they tried to blame it on 'poverty' and the percentage of kids from single parent homes. They spent a lot of our taxpayer money on studies that factored in those two things when measuring student achievement vs. districts like Niskayuna and others. Guess what? The study, done at the request of our own district, showed that it was not true, poverty was not a factor. Now we have a new social worker at the helm, who keeps harping on 'poverty'. Read your own district's study, Bud. Poverty and culture are two different things.

The U.S. Department of Education found that 14 elementary school teachers in the district referred African-American and Hispanic students to special education while ignoring similar academic and behavior problems of white students. The district acknowledges the problem and has agreed to make changes so that all students, regardless of race, are treated equally and fairly in the special education evaluation process.
Time for common sense rock control laws. Quarries, haulers, miners, and landscapers need to register and inventory all rocks to prevent these dangerous and heavy instruments of destruction and violence from falling into the wrong hands. After all- we can't blame the ones with the wrong hands, that would be judgmental of minorities and others.
