Another Cicero Fallacy! Seatbelt laws save lives.  Without the laws, use would be half of what it is today.
That 'half' who don't go through the windshield, are the lives saved.

Box, they are building cars with back up cameras, they have ABS breaking, air bags, sensor that tell you your tires are low on air, Volvo basically has roll cages in their cars, there are TONS of safety innovations that car manufactures have developed, and it has NOTHING TO DO WITH LAWS.

I agree.  Safety now is a SELLING POINT for car makers.  They are each trying to out preform the other.

But I remember when seatbelts were optional and to get one you needed to order it then have it installed
by the dealer.
Back then Car makers didn't want anything to point to how unsafe cars actually were.
Things like door knobs and lock buttons were tearing off arms.  Narrow, padded  dashboard ridges were
crushing skulls.  Detroit wanted to hush any issue with safety.
Remember Ralph Nader with "unsafe at any speed"?  That movement changed a lot about car safety.

Without MANDATORY seat belt laws, car makers would have never included them and with out seat belt
laws, more than half of Americans wouldn't use them.

That is so ridiculous.  If safety was a concern, they would outlaw motorcycles. The helmet law is a means to extort money.  They know that traveling at 55mph on a motorcycle with or without a helmet, if you crash, the chances of death are virtually the same.  But...if you don't have a helmet on, you can be fined, and the state and local government generate revenue.

Who is more safe, a person driving a car from 1960 55mph with no seat belt, or a motorcyclist driving 55mph wearing a helmet?

Unhelmeted riders are 40% more likely to die from a head injury than someone wearing a helmet.

I have mixed feelings on these laws... anyone dumb enough to ride with out a helmet kinda deserves
to get splattered and on the plus side, it will help remove the dumbest segment of society from the
gene pool.

Meanwhile, Schenectadians are contending with being stabbed, shot with an already illegal handgun, or just plain beaten with fists by a gang. Can any of us really begin to imagine what it was like for that man, attacked like that, his DAUGHTER beaten too, right in front of him?
By all means, let's focus on the crime that happened to an important person, that should get national attention. And focus on the easy target, the legal gun show promoters, they are already right out there in the open, complying with laws, paying taxes.
If they tried to go after the real problem, we've already decided that the seriously mentally ill don't deserve one red cent spent on a place to put them, you'd be taking on some powerful forces to buck that system. Go for the easy photo op. There's an agenda at work, and I'll bet Ms. Giffords doesn't even know what it is.

Exactly, it was their decision and the only one harmed is themselves, they're the only victim of these laws. A victimless crime is no crime at all, stupidity should not be a punishable offense.

So we must all be classified as criminals because there is a victim of a maniac. How wise you are for a high school drop out. Did you learn this in logic class?

"While Foreign Terrorists were plotting to murder and maim using homemade bombs in Boston, Democrap officials in Washington DC, Albany and here were busy watching ME and other law abiding American Citizens who are gun owners and taxpayers, in an effort to blame the nation's lack of security on US so that they could have a political scapegoat."

YES, who does she think she is, because nobody, NOBODY, cares about all the victims of violence, here in Schenectady, the ones I just mentioned, the ones that fly over my house in those helicopters I keep mentioning, yet, here is JUST ONE MORE statistic, but somehow SHE MATTERS SO MUCH? WHY? And why on earth is she showing up at gun shows? What do gun shows have to do with all these deaths, BY HANDGUNS? Nothing. NOT. A. THING.
People who manage to get themselves elected, to any public office, now they matter more than the rest of us?
Gabby Giffords was attacked by a stalker. This happens to women, and men as well, all over the United States, every day. It wasn't until the actress, Rebecca Schaeffer, was gunned down in cold blood, with a handgun, I might add, that we even started drafting laws to deal with these stalking crimes.Another actress, Uma Thurman, has had a deranged individual threatening her and her CHILDREN, for years, yet the guy is still out walking around. What is Ms. Gifford doing about finding a better way to deal with the dangerous mentally ill? Nothing. She is showing up at gun shows!
I am not a white lower middle class to blue collar man who enjoys gun shows as a pastime, but I am concerned with this government effort to demonize them, just as I would be concerned with government-led efforts to violate the civil rights of any other "group".

It's amazing how terrified Henry and Cissy are of one disabled woman who was almost killed while serving
in their government as a congressman.
It took her years to relearn how to walk and talk and she still has problems with her speech and balance.

She and her husband are avid gun enthusiasts and support the 2nd amendment... yet our board anarchists
tremble when she shows up at a local gun show.

I can picture your entire GunHugger forum hovering in fear because a disabled woman attends a gun
show!

SERVING? serving in the government? really? that's what you call it?

The 56-year-old man fatally shot at a Jackson motel Sunday has been identified as bass angler James "Jimmy" Johnson, according to a statement from Bassmasterhttp://www.clarionle.....-at-Jackson-Motel-6-

This is our real "gun violence" problem. What did showing up at a gun show do to help this? Why isn't anyone in government addressing this issue? It's a lot easier to show up for a photo op and make it look like you are doing something, than to actually tackle the real problems with violence that Americans are facing. Another useless politician, advancing an agenda that has nothing to do with the needs of the people who support her.

Government shouldn't be afraid of "the people"  if government is afraid of "the people" then there is something wrong with what government is doing

why is our current government so afraid of gun owners? - the founders of our country weren't afraid of gun owners  - they enlisted them to form our nation  - this is a fundamental cornerstone this country was founded on

as for this chic  - she should be raising $$$$ for mental health facilities - not background checks

What a silly thread from the start, she showed up to support background checks, so insane people and criminals don't get guns and to support law abiding citizens having guns. Bunch of whack job morons letting their paranoia get the better of them and making unfounded accusations.... again.... She's a good person just trying to help our society with common sense ideas.

Go to her site Americans for Responsible Solutions, its not just about background checks to stop the crazy from getting guns, she wants to go after what guns the LAW ABIDING citizens can own. Don't fall for the she is only trying to help, she is trying to limit your rights as an American. She was shot by a pistol so what does she target, so called assault rifles that kill less people in America then any other gun out there. As exit3 pointed out she should be raising awareness of mental health issues, I think everybody would get behind her on that, I know I would. She might be a good person but it doesn't mean she has good ideas.
