The current admin and higher ups can't contain the violence, intervention is needed, The City is useless and the State is sorely needed. The State should have been called in years ago.
I have to disagree...The system is a failure. Bringing in a larger governing authority isn't the answer. Set the kids and parents free. Dissolve the school. Barack Obama won't send his own children to DC city schools, he knows what an absolute failure it is. His solution wasn't to federalize the DC city schools, it was to send his children to a private school, just like he attended. Don't look at a failed bureaucracy and ask for a larger bureaucracy, that is counterintuitive.

Schenectady is rated the poorest and one of the 10 worst systems in the State. But they have the best theatre, screen writing program and turf. Too bad grads can't read and write. Thank God Kosier is over there to straighten things out. Like he did at the County.

these kids need hard dicipline and parents need a lesson in tough love.....and then....don't SUSPEND....keep them in school...that is a harder

and money...money.....educators are not like past ones....they were dedicated....now it's how much money can they make....
there are a few educators throughout the country who are doing a great job....for less pay....

Heightened security at a school is a show of force and distrust toward the children. The school is communicating to the children that "we don't trust you". Kids need to be taught SELF DISCIPLINE when it comes to their personal behavior, not external discipline. A constant show of force and security validates the child's misbehavior and tells the child that we already acknowledge you are going to misbehave, so these external forces are put in place to control your behavior. It's now a game of cat and mouse, and the child will only behave when they are being watched. Once they are not being watched, they will revert to bad behavior, because the bad behavior is what the school has acknowledged is their typical behavior. So now,when they get out of school and into society, and not closely watched and monitored, they will behave in the way the school expects them to behave without monitoring - badly.
I equate public school to Walmart. How many people enjoy going into Walmart? How many people avoid going at all costs? Imagine if you were forced to go shopping at Walmart everyday, how happy would you be? That is public schooling.

Why do you think security cameras are being installed at a frightening pace in public areas? They are well aware what they created. I almost believe that is why the NSA domestic spying, stop and frisk, and domestic drones are in the news. They WANT people to know they are being watched, just like in school. Behave - or else!
Kids from Afghanistan that live here now want to go to school, too. I attended Schenectady Public Schools, my family attended the city schools as far back as we had city schools, I had no problems, neither did they, I could give you a list longer than your arm of all the very successful people who graduated from these schools. We can't educate NYC's castoffs. Tell me who can? I agree that in recent decades our system has been allowed to go all to hell, but so have all forms of government, haven't they? Our schools suffer from the same problems, politics and the unions, people not being held accountable for whether or not they do their jobs. People like to say, oh, the public schools, but they are ignoring the fact that right now in the "bad" schools like Schenectady and Albany High, they are still turning out graduates who are still winning to academic honors and going on to good colleges. As far as the discipline, all the school can do is turn the place into some kind of minimum security prison, they cannot toss the consistent problem kids out, they can't even separate them from the kids who just want to feel safe in school. I know people who attended Guilderland Schools. The schools barely taught them to read and write. Those schools do not offer anything superior to ours, except freedom from large numbers of totally unsocialized kids. The same with the Catholic schools. Some of them are very good, some, not so good, but every child who attends has someone behind him or her who wants her to get an education, and if a child is a consistent discipline problem, he or she is out. I'm not exonerating our schools, the public schools do have some problems they create for themselves, such as a closed shop of superintendents who don't know their posteriors from a hole in the ground, and they go around and around, from district to district, working their magic, getting run out of town on a rail, and then landing softly in some other district that should know better. The quality of the public schools largely reflects the educational background of the communities they are located in. We used to have a lot of doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, businesspeople, etc. living here and sending their kids to the schools. Even if you wanted to go into a more blue-collar field, the quality learning environment was there, you could get a diploma that meant something, as well as enough knowledge for your own sake that you would not be left out of full participation in society. I don't know exactly what my point is, but I hear people, especially in the media, bashing "the public schools" in general, And I know damn well that a number of them attended public school themselves, and as for the "journalists" who didn't, the Chris Cuomos and the Chelsea Clintons, they are holding themselves up as some kind of stellar example of a ruling class that is better than the rest of us by virtue of not having gone to school with the rest of America. Whew.
it appears that there is a total social breakdown in society at all levels! From elected officials, to cops, to teachers, to parent/s to kids. But this is the end result of what the 60/70's hippies protested for. They wanted the 'if it feels good do it' freedom with no strings attached.....no consequences, no liabilities, no personal responsibility, no rules, no laws. If it doesn't hurt anyone else....do it! HOWEVER....it may not be effecting folks 'personally'....but it has effected ALL of society collectively.

I would like to take a buses full of kids from Mont Pleasant, Hamilton Hill, the Van Vranken neighborhood, and instead of busing them to the high school,drop them off in Niskayuna, or maybe Shenendehowa. See how much better those "superior" schools do with them.

Humans aren't one size fits all. People would love economically feasible options. With the high level of taxes and cost of living, a large segment of America is limited on their options. A $130k home in Schenectady is paying about $5k in taxes, you add in the mortgage, food, and clothing, and the rest of the necessities, who has money left to put two children in private school? I believe the annual median income in Schenectady is around $25k. You do the math.
Public school is engineered collectivism. Society is a result of government engineered collectivism. People still look back at their schooling nostalgically, as if times were better. It wasn't any better, sure more controlled, and the affects of schooling less publicized. But the problems with compulsory schooling was still there. Kids were still cutting school because they hated it, and there were truant officers that chased down children to drag them back into the environment they were getting away from.

First.....the dress code I was referring to was also in public schools....no uniforms....just a dress code. and even the folks with less money dressed according to the school's dress codes. I hear that 'back in the day', boys couldn't wear jeans to school and the male teachers wore suits and ties and the female teachers wore conservative dresses. Now the boys wear wife beater shirts, ripped jeans and hats and the girls wear tank tops, ripped jeans and short skirts. and the teachers dress very casual. and why? because they want to, they can and it's their choice....yes? They aren't hurting anyone!
Second....I know that I didn't skip school because I hated school....it was just for the thrill of it...really!
Third....I never heard of gang wars in the 60/70 between mt. pleasant and linton. Just always heard of the big Election day football game. Perhaps there are others here who know about gang wars back then.
