Birds along that section of the Hudson have had high levels of PCB's for decades.  Since PCB's are identifiable
as to their source, you can study levels of PCB's that originated in the Hudson River no matter where you
find them.

There have been high levels of Hudson River (GE) PCB's found in whales in the Pacific North West.  Whales who
have never been in the Atlantic or near the Hudson River.

It has been discovered, just a few years back, that pollutants dumped in the ocean in places with lax regulations, like China, don't stay where they are dumped. Good thing we had scientists to confirm what any kid with a bottle and a note could've told them.
