Will any of these not for profits step up and volunteer to run a healthy lunch program with fresh, local produce featured? I know that even kids from higher income homes sometimes don't get healthy, homemade hot lunches. Some of the parents who collect benefits could help out if they wanted to. Make a real, feel-good, cooperative effort out of it? Or will it be corporate pseudo-food paid for with our tax dollars? Notice how this whole "stamp out hunger" campaign dovetails nicely with the interests of Big Food?

There was a program doing this. When my kids where at St John's the school lunch was made by some local non-profit that was teaching short order/culinary skills to those who were looking to make some better choices in life (didn't know the details of the workers, but got the feeling that maybe they had dealt with addiction issues in the past ). The food was terrific. All fresh, all made from scratch, all served with a warm smile from someone who was really taking pride in what he put on the kids plates. The few times I helped out with lunch duty I was offered samples and couldn't believe how good the food was. We still made lunches most days, but we had no problem having them eat school food when their favorite meal came up (or if we got lazy and didn't have the Oomph to make yet another lunch).

I think the program was through SCAP, but I can't remember for sure. It would be a huge improvement though if something like this could be worked out with the city schools. Get rid of the corporate lunch programs and get some real people back in the kitchens who actually care about the work they are doing.

I knew it could be done! The thing is, if you try to put real food in government schools, you have some very powerful forces working against you. That ccorporate stuff is created in a test tube to conform to USDA guidelines, which just happen to favor that stuff over real food. Sounds sinister, doesn't it?
Michele Obama is hindered by the fact that she can't mention any of this, so she's got to focus on telling the kids to do a jumping jack, like it's their fault.

Don't let gov't schools serve and feed your children.  It's compusory, don't confuse your kids into thinking its benevolence.  There are pre conditions on school lunch.  They tell you when to eat, what you can eat, and how much you can eat.   You, your family and private charity are the only people that will help you in a time of need without strict control over you.

This lunch program for all just conditions otherwise relatively independent people to be dependent.  What happens after graduation and food isn't served to them anymore?  Where do you think they will be conditioned to go and get what has been "free" their whole life?

Notice Bloomberg speaks against "soda", and not high fructose corn syrup, because that would make his billionaire buddies angry.
Kids who were in need were getting free lunches before this, I'd like to point out. Nobody is against food for kids, even if they question this program.
